Causal Body

The Causal Body (Skt. कारणशरीर Karana Sharira) is the subtlest and most fundamental layer of the body-mind complex. It acts as the storehouse of all desires, tendencies (vasanas), and karmic impressions that shape individual experience.

Nature and Function

In the hierarchical structure of memory, the causal body serves as the core of the mind. It contains the potential for all lower layers — the subtle body and gross body — and directs their functioning and manifestation.
  • Storehouse of Potential: The causal body contains all skills, intelligence, and awareness in an unexpressed, potential form. It is the ultimate repository of a jiva's experiences spanning thousands of years across many lives.
  • Source of Impulses: It continuously sends out subtle impulses into the lower layers of memory. These impulses are experienced in the mind as desires and instinctive urges that drive action.
  • Stickiness of Memory: The causal body represents the "stickiness" or habit-patterns in the universal memory. This stickiness is responsible for the tendency of patterns to recreate themselves in the same fashion, driving the cycle of samsara.

Experience and Dissolution

  • State of Deep Sleep: During deep sleep, when the gross and subtle bodies are inactive and the mind is bypassed, only the causal body remains active in its potential form.
  • Object of Witnessing: Although extremely subtle, the causal body is still part of the experience and is witnessed by the experiencer. The true Self is beyond even the causal body.
  • Purification and Liberation: On the path of knowledge, a seeker becomes aware of the impulses rising from the causal body. By developing detachment and abiding in the Self, the causal body can be purified, and its latent tendencies dissolved, leading to liberation.
