A hypothesis is a proposed explanation for a phenomenon, made as a starting point for further investigation.

On the path of knowledge, hypotheses are:

• Provisional assumptions to be tested

• Tools for inquiry, not conclusions

• Subject to verification through direct experience and logic

• Distinguished from beliefs, which are accepted without testing

The path of knowledge uses hypotheses as working tools but never confuses them with knowledge.
