Independence is freedom from reliance on or control by others.

On the path of knowledge, independence is:

• A quality of a seeker - not depending on others for one's understanding

• The recognition that truth must be verified personally

• Not isolation but self-reliance in inquiry

• A consequence of knowledge

The seeker must be independent in their thinking, not merely accepting what others say.
