# Laws of Memory Part 07 Welcome to Pure Experiences. This is a series on Laws of the Memory. The fourth law is: Law of Deniability. Which means each and every event that happens in the memory is completely deniable. Which means we cannot confirm whether it really happened. Anybody can deny that this happened. We cannot confirm that something is present or absent, whether it is an object, person, speech, thought, anything non-physical, metaphysical, paranormal, normal. Any event, any phenomena can be completely denied. Anybody can say that this is not present, this never happened. This is also called the Law of Repudiation or the Law of Uncertainty, which means nothing can be certainly said about the contents of the memory, activities of the memory, anything that appears in the memory. And that also means it is completely falsifiable. You can falsify anything you want, including your own existence. ## Exceptions to the Law There are a few things that are exception, but they are exceptions simply because they are not the memory. The first is the whole existence itself, which is pure potential. So that cannot be denied, that there is existence. You cannot deny it. And second is the experiencer, which is the witnessing ability, seer. It is certain that it is there. Otherwise, where will this law of deniability operate if there is no existence? And who will witness it to show that there is such a law? So the law of deniability applies to that which is manifested. This is important to note: memory that is manifested. ## The Psi Uncertainty Principle This is also called the Psi Uncertainty Principle. This is a word coined by the famous scientist, mystic and occultist, my guru, Tom Campbell, which is a specific case of law of deniability. This principle says that the psi phenomena or the paranormal cannot be confirmed. You will never obtain an evidence of something which is completely subjective and paranormal. There can be agreement about such events, but there won't be any proof of it. Only the objective things can be proven to each other. And anything which is subjective, whether it is normal, paranormal, abnormal, does not matter, only you are the witness of it. Witness here means like a witness in the court of law. Only you can confirm or deny, nobody else. Sometimes, these events can leave some traces. They can leave some evidence behind. But somebody can always come up with some alternative explanation. This happens probably every day in the lives of even ordinary people. But this is almost like a law for any seeker. This must be your own story sometimes. Some seeker says, "I saw some non-physical being." Somebody says, "I saw a dead person." And obviously, it can be denied. It is not certain. It can be falsified. First, nobody believes that person because it is a purely subjective matter. Because it does not repeat continuously most of the time, it is erased from the memory. The memory becomes faint, then gets distorted. Then the person convinces themselves that "I'm going crazy. I'm hallucinating. I'm daydreaming. This is my fear," and so on. It is rationalized out of existence. After a few days, a few months, it is as if nothing had happened. It's gone. Nobody saw it. Like a dream. You are the only witness of your dreams. Once you wake up, you can deny them: "It was just a dream, nothing happened." And in 10 minutes, all traces of it are gone, wiped out, most of the time. These are examples. This is our local memory, and so it is very easy to see that, yes, you can deny it, nothing is certain, falsifiable. It is probably very clear to you that, yes, the dream never happened, as the dead person probably was hallucination, creation of my mind. That much any intelligent person accepts. What is difficult to accept is that the so-called physical world is also deniable. You can never be certain of what happens here. ## Stability versus Deniability in the Physical World And many people will not agree. And that is because the physical world is manifested out of a memory which is more stable than a human memory, a local memory. It is so stable that the events leave a mark, an impression that lasts for a long time, much longer. Sometimes hours, minutes, sometimes days, months, years, sometimes million years. Some of the events are very stable here. So, for example, geologist, paleontologist, they will say, "This and this event happened. Some volcano erupted, some meteor fell here," because, yes, the traces are still there, "and this creature lived here 100 million years ago, because the bones are still there as rocks." And what about other events that happened? No trace. Nobody can say what happened. The more complicated that event is, the less certain it becomes. For example, volcanoes and bones, they are not that complicated. Stone pillars and ancient buildings, they are somewhat complicated, but not much. They stay. You cannot deny it. But human activities, activities of other creatures, villages, towns, they disappear quickly. Probably nobody remains there to say what happened. Same for the whole countries, civilizations. They all disappear. Nothing can be said. Some people will say, "Look, this is written in the history book, government-approved history book." [laughs] "And that this happened. This country attacked me 3,000 years ago, or my country, and now I need to hate these people and kill them. Government told me through the history book." That's all can be known. You can point to some book or somebody else to find out what happened, but you don't really know what happened. And the books change when the government or the ruling people change, and it is denied, something else happened now, which is more aligned with the agenda of the ruling party. Everything can be denied that happened in the past, distant past. Those things which look like solid and cannot be denied, they will become deniable later on after some time passes, a lot of time. The illusion of certainty is produced by apparent stability of the memory. Otherwise, nothing is there. Even the present happenings, near future, near past can be denied. This happens every day, probably. A person does something, some mistakes, and once found out, he says, "No, I never did this." "No, look, this is the evidence." Somebody will come and say, "No, this happened because of that other person," and so on. This is our everyday event. Why? Because that activity of the person is so unstable and short-lived, and so complex, probably, that the evidences that are left, they also evaporate. Any story can be cooked up. And even more transient events are speech. Somebody says something, and next day they say, "No, I never said this." Or the- they spin it up into something else: "What I meant was not that, but this." This is called repudiation. It is a big problem in court of law. So that's why people make each other sign on papers, take thumb impressions and all, so that they cannot deny what they said. Somebody promises something: "I'll do this, I'll do that. Marry me." After some days, some months, some years, gone. "Oh, but you said that! You promised." "No, I never said that. I don't remember." And thoughts and emotions and feelings, and our imaginations, desires, they are even more fleeting. You, yourself won't be able to talk about them certainly. You don't know what you were thinking about just few minutes ago. Nobody will be able to tell what the thought was. They are so unstable. So the logic says only the speed of change causes certainty. If it is changing slowly, for some time, you can be certain about it. If it is changing quickly, nobody can know what is happening. Nobody knows. Sometimes some phenomena are so fast that they are not detectable by the senses, and so they don't exist. They are so fast. Some phenomena can be detected by instruments, and they leave a trace in the instrument. But some are beyond the capability of instrument. The instruments have a range. So infinite things are happening. Some are caught for a while. Some are known for some time, and they disappear. Their knowledge also disappears. This is amazing. Everything can be denied given sufficient time, speed of the change. Logic says that since everything is changing and there is no time, nothing actually happened. So, obviously, [laughs] nothing can be certain. Everything can be falsified because it never happens, actually, in reality. The memory gives us an illusion that something is happening. Speed it up, nothing. If it is not impressed on anything, gone. It's completely deniable. If it is witnessed by many, there is some certainty that it happens, but it's gone as soon as those people are gone, because these people are also temporary. ## Consequence of Unknowability Why is this law seen? Because it is a consequence of unknowability. Law of unknowability says nothing can be known. So the consequence is even if something is known, it is erased. The knowledge also is impermanent. Unknowability itself is a consequence of law of emptiness, as we saw. You cannot know anything, why? Because it's all empty. The memory is empty. So, like this, the laws do not contradict each other. Actually, one supports the other, and they follow from each other. The problems with deniability is that it makes our life somewhat complicated. Anybody can do anything. Anybody can put up any kind of fake story, any kind of mask, fake personality, and that can be denied. You cannot be certain of anything in this world. Either this can happen, that can happen, so on. That makes survival difficult, and that needs to be overcome by a lot of intelligence. Because if there is more certainty, less intelligent creatures can survive. But if there is uncertainty, anything can happen, it takes a lot more intelligence to deal with such situations. That puts a big question mark on the matter of evidence. What is undeniable evidence? There are certain things that were considered undeniable. For example, mathematics. But then it was shown that you can deny the laws of mathematics also. I think it is by Gödel or other very talented mathematicians. Some theorems and conclusions of mathematics, they are valid in a narrow area only. It's all relative truth, as we said before. So the greatest mathematical law comes up, everybody's happy. After 50 or 100 years, somebody proves it wrong, or finds an exception to the law. But everybody is happy again because that means progress happened. Same with physical sciences and the other sciences, for example, mental sciences, psychology, or social sciences. They are in a bad condition because of immense amount of uncertainty. You write a book on something, social sciences, behavior, and so on, it becomes outdated in 10 to 20 years. So, anyway, we are not concerned with what happens out there. We are concerned with what happens to me. Am I really present? And the answer is no. It is totally possible to deny that I am here. We saw this many times now in our previous episodes. The individual is falsifiable. There is no individual. "No, but there is something: body, mind, and all." They are all illusions. "No, but there is illusion." It is unknowable. You cannot say anything about it certainly. So a seeker is left with nothing in the end, empty-handed. There is no place to stand because of law of deniability. "What is certain?" anybody will ask. So my own essence is certain, which is existence itself. However, this kind of certainty is completely useless in everyday life. Only the illusion is useful in the illusion. But what to do when everything can be denied? Yes, this is a practical question. ## Rising Above Deniability: The First Way Don't try to find something which is certain in the illusion. You will never be able to find it. You will never be able to prove it. And not to others, obviously, but you won't be able to prove it to yourself. "This thing certainly exists." It is not possible to say like this because of this law. So again, we take that which is useful. This is the way to rise above the law of deniability. You cannot break it. You can only rise above it. There are two ways to rise above the law of deniability. First way is accept that nothing is certain. That will increase your intelligence hundred times. Be ready for any kind of event. Don't get convinced that, "Look, this world is going to stay forever. I'm going to live forever. I'm here now, it is perfectly certain." No. Mentally prepare yourself for any kind of change. Everything disappears. Know this. Instead of fighting this law and trying to find certainty, try to live with uncertainty. Anything can happen. And most of the time, seemingly random things happen which are not in our control. We cannot control them, and they leave no trace after some time. So fortunately, it is not completely unpredictable. You can work with uncertainty. Be ready that something can happen which can be denied, which can be repudiated, and you won't be able to do anything. Most of the events do not happen according to our wishes, and they do not last. This brings a lot of peace of mind, acceptance. Plus, it makes you calm and quiet, and wise. Intelligence increases. You do only that which is completely necessary, totally necessary, as we saw before, Law of Necessity. And let the law of deniability do whatever it wants to do. That brings peace of mind. Uncertainty is the law. [laughs] Accept this. Somebody said, "Relax, nobody is in control. Nothing is in our control." Yes, the one who thinks "I'm controlling" itself is uncontrollable. There is nobody like this. That is phantom image of somebody trying to control, to find certainty. This becomes a big problem when you venture into the area of spirituality. Now, everything is deniable here. Are you enlightened? Nobody can prove it. Do you have powers? Nobody can prove it. Why do these scientists, they struggle with experiments of spiritual kind, paranormal kind? Nobody accepts their [laughs] findings. Everybody laughs at them. Why? It's called pseudo-science. It is completely deniable. The more complicated and less physical things become, the more difficult it becomes to prove anything. Very easy to falsify all these things. So if you are in spirituality, make it your habit that nobody will believe you, and that is not also necessary. It's not necessary that everybody should believe you, everybody should say yes to whatever you say, even though you think it is the highest possible knowledge in the universe. The path of knowledge is telling you the truth. Ah, nobody will believe it. And they will find out arguments, evidences against whatever you say, because they live in their own deniable worlds. They are living in their own false construct. So not only it is impossible to prove your point in spirituality, it is actually stupidity. Don't try. Don't even try. It's not possible. Even if you find one or two people who are just as crazy as you, they will agree for a few minutes, sometimes few days or few years, and they diverge into their own la-la land of spirituality: "No, I have evolved from that thing that you told me. I'm doing this meditation by this famous guru of Himalayas." And after a few months, you will see them doing something else and saying something else entirely. And if you ask them, "What happened to your previous truth?" and they will deny it: "No, I never said that was true." So spirituality is even more unstable field. Don't waste your time. That will bring you peace, plus you can progress faster, because you are not wasting time running after something which is certain, not falsifiable, 100% evident. No, it is from your own limited perspective. Nobody else even knows about all these things. They never heard about it, they will never hear about it. The deniability is so strong. And this life is fleeting, momentary. All that you collected as knowledge and abilities, and whatever, goes down the drain of death. It's all lost. So that will bring some peace and equanimity, and you will rise above the deniability in a sense that it will not trouble you too much. ## Rising Above Deniability: The Second Way The second way to rise above deniability is to join forces with it. If you cannot beat it, join it. Become friends. What else can you do? So a master, a tantric, uses deniability in his or her favor. You can take advantage of deniability. If you do your practice in complete secrecy, the practices will bring fruits, because the illusion likes to be denied. So if you're doing it in public, everybody is seeing it, you're trying to produce an evidence to please each and everybody and their dogs, the illusion or Maya does not like it. She will do everything possible to cause failure in this project. First of all, it is not necessary. You want your desires fulfilled, you don't want to prove anything to anybody. Secondly, this law is getting broken, Law of Deniability, so the law will do everything to enforce itself. Very strange events can happen. I've seen this myself. If you try to break the laws, they restore themselves sometimes very violently, urgently, and strange events happen. So you don't want that kind of trouble. Do your practices in complete secrecy. And whatever you do, deny it. Flow with the law. Go with the law. Do not oppose it. That is same as rising above the law. Like a sailor is not fighting with the wind. The sailor simply orients the sail in proper direction, and the wind carries the boat. He does nothing. He relaxes on the boat. Same way, a master uses the Law of Deniability to become even more powerful. If it can be denied, everything can happen. This is the law. Or this is the secret, you can say. If you can deny it, you can do anything. If it is so personal and so private that only you know what is happening, only you see it, then there is infinite possibility that opens up. There you almost bypass this law. Sometimes some very stable creations can be made if you can leave a route of escape for Law of Deniability. When a back door is left open, so that you can collapse everything into nothingness anytime, then the illusion will allow you to do anything. If you publicize it, if you announce it to everybody, if you make very bold claims, the Law of Deniability will destroy it completely. So the first rule of tantra is everything should be secret. It is called occult for this deeper reason. Occult means occluded, hidden. If it is not hidden properly, and the magic never works. So you will find practitioners doing their practices in complete darkness, nothing but a candle, far away from villages and towns, deep caves where nobody can reach, or they completely withdraw from the physical world. Once they get the power to go out of the physical world, they do not do anything here. No intelligent practitioner will do any kind of practices in the physical world. They respect the laws here. They know even if I produce any evidence, the evidence will work against me. That's what will happen. You can check the history, if you believe it, that people who did magical work, they were burned alive. You can blame the Law of Deniability for this, not the people. Anybody who did the witchcraft and all, they were either feared, their image was negative, or they were killed. So everything went underground, or you can say, above, not under, above the physical, beyond the physical. So in your own world, in your own universe, you are free to do anything you want. However, there also nothing will remain certain for long, but all your desires will be fulfilled. If you flow with the flow of laws, this cosmic flow of illusion, if you don't oppose it, will give you everything. All desires are fulfilled. That does not mean you own everything or everything will remain with you forever. No. Ownership is something different from desire fulfillment. So a very intelligent tantric does not want to own anything, simply wants to get whatever they want, and then leave it. Because once the desire is fulfilled, there is no use of what you own. It eventually becomes a burden. After the fulfillment of desire, that object of desire becomes a burden. You cannot live with it. So the tantric knows this and moves on, flows, progresses, never stands still, never gets attached to the accumulations or you can say the gifts of the Maya, Devi, illusion. You do not possess anything. And when somebody says, "You did this, you know this, you have the power," absolutely deny it. Do not let your secrets go out. Absolutely lie about it. Falsify, make it false immediately: "I never did this, I don't know anything, I have no knowledge, I have no powers." Otherwise, the Law of Deniability will come back and attack you. Your life will become very difficult. Lying is permitted. Masking, hiding, permitted. Even you can assume a terrifying appearance so that nobody tries to spy on you, and there are many more ways about which I'm not allowed to talk here in public. How to use the Law of Deniability for your own advantage, a whole book can be written about it. But know only this much that this is the key. Repudiation is the key. Use this key and you will progress. This is the second way to rise above the Law of Deniability. ## Summary So in short, in summary: don't worry if nothing gets proven, if everything comes out to be true or false and a mixture of true and false. Truth becomes false, false becomes truth in this world, in your life, in this dream that you are living. If everything is uncertain, anything happens, nothing happens according to your wish, relax. Nobody is in control. Secondly, rise above the Law of Deniability: use it, relax, peace of mind, accept. And if you set your sail correctly, this law will take you to the higher orders of the illusion. You will rise in the hierarchy because you know how to work. You know how to walk on the water without producing any ripples. You know how to work in a mysterious way. That is the correct way. We'll continue with the Laws of Memory in next episode.
