# Laws of Memory : Part 04 ## Law of law, Law of Emptiness --- Welcome to Pure Experiences. This is a series on Laws of Memory. As we discussed in the last part, laws are a necessary outcome of a structure. Structure is the law; law is the structure. ## Law of Laws Laws are also known by various names, like rules, order, or regularity. The rules, the order, the regularity is a natural outcome of structure in the memory. Since there are all possibilities, there is a possibility of infinite kinds of structures, and therefore there can be infinite sets of laws. One structure can have one or more than one law. So, usually, a structure has a set of laws instead of only one law. ## Example: The Circle So, just to illustrate with an example why the structures give rise to laws, we take a simple circle. A circle is a structure. It is a pattern. It is a geometry. You will discover that if you travel on the circle, you will be always the same distance from the center. How is that possible? It looks like a law. It looks like this is the rule, and you cannot break the rule. Who made this law? How did it appear there from thin air? The answer is simple, and everybody can understand that it is a natural consequence of the shape of the circle. The structure itself gives rise to the law; it implies the law in it. Nobody forced you to travel at a fixed distance from the center. Nobody made this law: "Here is the circle, and from today it will follow this rule." Never happened. The circle is the law, and law is the circle. ## Example: The Triangle Another example: take a triangle, and you will find many laws about the triangletrigonometry. You'll find three sides, three angles, three points. You will never find four sides, 50 sides, or half number of points, 0.5 points. These laws cannot be broken because once a structure is defined, it will give rise to all these laws, and these laws must be obeyed. So, simple examples, but we can find more structures, and we can do this exercise of deriving the laws of those structures. This can look like mathematics, geometryyes, it is. That can remind you of Platonism, or Pythagoras, who thought that the whole universe is nothing but geometry. There are some interesting truths in those beliefs, those philosophies. That is not completely meaningless. And many of the modern theories of physics, they assume some kind of structure which is hidden, just like we are assuming. ## Apparent Structures The structures in the memory, they are apparent. You cannot directly see them, but you can infer them mathematically, in your imagination, in some other abstract way, because these structures are not experienced. Something which is limited, and modeled, imagined, is experienced. But fortunately, we can experiment and find the structure behind the illusion that this structure is producing, and the key to that is finding the laws in it. Get any experience, try to find the laws behind it, you will get some intuition about the structure. So, that sounds a lot like scientific method. It is the scientific method. Now that solves the question: why mathematics is effective in science. It is not a miracle; it is not a paradox. Mathematics is a description of the structure. Physics, or the experimental physics, is an experience of the structure. Not so amusing, finally. ## Multi-Dimensional Structures So, we took an example of the circle, but the structures can be multidimensional, and they can have very complex kind of relations. You can discover them, and they cause a complex set of laws, these multidimensional structures. By multidimensional, I mean there is a hierarchy of laws, because there is probably a hierarchy of structuresstructures within structures, and then more structures within it. So, you will see that the laws that define the lower structures, they are not applicable to the higher structures. We say that they break down at the higher levels, higher dimensions. That solves another mystery, that: why do laws break sometimes? For example, any person in the occult field will say, "I can see across the wall," or "I can see across many miles of distance. I can see in the past, and I can see in the future." That seems to break all the laws of physical world. So, that suggests that physical world is simply a lower dimensional structure within a higher dimensional structure, and the occult master somehow accesses the higher structures. That does not break the law, actually. That uses a higher law to bypass the lower law. You can see that by doing that future prediction or whatever, the physical world is not affected. It functions nicely; laws are not broken. This is very important to note: that you can bypass the laws if you get hold of something higher, some higher dimensional structure. This revelation is very important for any tantric who is trying to master these laws, trying to manipulate the illusion. ## Example: The Sphere Triangle So, an example of breaking of the laws, again, we take it from geometry or mathematics. Here is a triangle again. On a paper, two-dimensional surface, the sum of the angles of the triangle is 180 degrees. But we want to know what happens if the triangle is shifted to higher dimensional structure. So, you draw the triangle on a sphere instead of paper, like they draw it on a globe. From the North Pole to the equator, one line, then you go along the equator some distance, and then draw back one line to the North Pole. So, you get a triangle that is curved, and you will see that the angles at the equator are 90 degrees each. It is already 180 degrees there, and there is another angle at North Pole, and that is also a positive angle. So, the sum comes out to be more than 180 degrees. How did that law break? The law that said the sum of the angles of a triangle is always 180 degrees, suddenly it broke. Actually, it did not break. If you draw the triangle on a paper, the law holds; cannot break it. But you overpowered it; you transcended that law by rising to a higher dimension, the third dimension. Now, the triangles can have many kinds of sums of angles; you can discover it. What if you draw the triangle on an even higher dimensional surface? Now, that goes firmly in the domain of mathematics. My mathematics is very weak. I'm not going to tell you, and I'm not going to bore you with that. But many people like all these kinds of mental gymnastics, mathematics. The point is, laws can be transcended. It seems that they are broken, but they're not broken. We simply overcome one law using the other law. They will hold in their own dimension or their own domain. As soon as you cross the domain, something else will hold. But there is never a state of lawlessness, which means there is no state of disorder, irregularity. This is very much debatable, so I'll leave it for you as a homework. Let me know your conclusions, comments. ## Ascension So, as new structures formthey form all the timenew laws appear. As the structure changes, new laws appear. Since everything is changing, yes, laws are changing. This is amazing. The laws themselves are not permanent. Yes, they produce an illusion of permanence. They produce an illusion that somebody is doing this, somebody is making these laws and making me obey these laws. Not only me, everything from a rock to a president of a country, everybody's forced to obey some laws, natural laws. And yes, there are man-made laws, there are social laws and so on, which is currently beyond our scope. We're talking about something which appears naturally as a result of a structure in the memory. Since you cannot see the structure, you assume that the law is the truth. As we discussed in the first part of the series, that is not true. Whatever you think is true, ultimately is not true. So, I don't want to discourage you from finding the truth, but this is, this seems to be a law. So, how can you master the illusion? How can you overpower all these laws? Because it looks like they are coming on my way to become Superman or a powerful person, or whatever is called a siddha person. Yes, but you cannot break them. You need to rise above them, as we saw right now. That rising above, or ascending, ascension, is known as evolution, or in spiritual world, it is called spiritual evolution, or ascension; Sanskrit, *Aarohan*. Why do you need to do that? Probably you came down somehow, a lower structure, lower dimensional. Now you need to go back. You will never be able to break the laws because wherever you are right now, you are part of that structure. If you think I'm physical, yes, you cannot break the physical laws now, because the physical body is a part of the physical structure. But as soon as you rise above physical, you will see that you can overcome the physical laws. We do not become powerful by breaking the laws; we become powerful by rising above, ascension. If you think that I'm down somewhere, I have descended, *avtaran*, you need to find a way to go up. Do not chase after the laws; that is stupidity. Do not try to bend them or break them; again, stupidity. Know themthis is intelligence. Knowledge is the key, and rise above them. This is the real power. ## Further Study/Practices So, hopefully this much pointing is enough. You can master the laws. You can become a master of the illusion. Those who want to know more, they should do the Tantra Bodhi Program, which is available on my website, gyanmarg.guru. You can't imagine how many kinds of treasures are available on that website, and they are all free. Tantra Bodhi Program is also free, and it is completely online. Only thing is that only selected people are admitted to that program; it is not for everyone. So, if you go to that website, check out the program, you will know what needs to be done. And that will provide you so much detailed knowledge of the illusion that the only thing that remains to do is practice. The knowledge is not the sufficient condition; you need practice. So, many practices are also suggested in that program. So, now you know laws regarding the law, and you are ready to master these laws, bend these laws. You can directly jump into the illusion, or you can study the laws that everybody or the masters have already studied, and everybody in the field knows about them. ## 1 - Law of Emptiness So, we'll start with the Law of Emptiness. This is a law of the memory which says the memory is empty. What is it empty of? It is obviously not empty of content. It is not empty of impressions. What is it empty of? It is empty of any substance. Anything that you can imagine, is the substance of the memory? It is not. It is not made up of anything. It is not made up of atoms, metals, plastic, or organic matter, neurons, nothing. These things are made up of memory. That's why, in one of the previous parts, I said memory is the substance. Memory is the essence, but it itself is not made up of anything. It is empty. In other words, you can say that it has no qualities which any human mind can grasp. "When I can see the qualities, just now you told me that there are colors, shapes, sounds, and so on, structures in the memory, it is quality, isn't it?" Yes, that is not true. That is apparent qualities. The memory does not have any true qualities. You cannot call the laws of the memory a quality of the memory also. Somebody can say, "Look, these are the laws of the memory, that is a quality. It is not empty." But as we saw that infinite laws are possible, so as soon as you say that, "Okay, this law defines the memory, the memory is made up of this law," the next second another law appears. The first law is replaced by the next law, and 20 laws appear, then million laws appear. So, that shows the full freedom there; there is no law. What does it show? Absolute freedom. It is not randomness, obviously. There is a difference between randomness and freedom. So, all that appears in the memory is an illusion, and anything can appear, so it is like a blank canvas. Any picture can be drawn there. It is an empty canvas; the canvas itself is zero. Is it like space? There is no space. The space is a fabricated, irreducible that comes out of sensory measurements. Now, it can be debated whether space is irreducible or not. It does seem like that sometimes. Objects appear in a visual space, yes. Sounds appear in an audio space, and our movements of our body happen in a tactile space. If you close your eyes and close your ears, and move your hands and feet, your arms, or the whole body, you will sense a space. Where is it? It is all in the mind. It is all illusion, constructed out of sensory data. So, memory is not space. Space is an outcome of memory. Memory is spaceless, timeless, so nothing. There is nothing. But still, it has a potential to give rise to everything. So, "nothing" is not a good word; "emptiness" is a good word. Why does it look like it is something? Why can't I see the emptiness? Because the senses, they do not show us the memory; they show something limited and constructed, transformed version of the patterns in the memory. You cannot see the emptiness; you cannot see the memory; you cannot see the existence as it is. Why? There's nothing to be seen; it is empty. So, the limitedness of our experience gives us this illusion that there is something, and it is only this much. That gives us some kind of ignorance, wrong beliefs, blind beliefs. You can say wrong assumptions. So, sensory limits, limitedness provide an illusion of fullness, or there being something. How to know that it is empty, memory is empty? How to establish this? How to prove this? Where is the evidence? You can see that the experiences are changing. There are no objects, there is no world, as we saw in the last part. No bodies, no individual. What are they? They are changing experiences. So, what happens when one experience changes into another, or disappears completely, does not look like an experience now? What happens? You will see that the previous one is completely gone. It's nowhere. Yes, there is a memory of it, that's why you know that there was something. So, before going into your memory, it was already a memory. It simply changed, but nothing was left behind. Only thing that can be said, previous experience, which is no more, gone, was empty. What about this one? Is it made of something? You will see that, no, this also goes away; nothing is left behind. To contrast it with something which is made up of substance, you can take the example of a house. House is made up of bricks, sometimes. And if you break the houseyou want to renovate it, you want to modernize it, break down your old housewhat is left behind? Bricks, parts of bricks, a lot of dirt. That shows that it was made up of bricks. Very simple example. So, the house was not empty; it was full of bricks. Bricks are left; the structure is gone, yes. Substance is still there. So, that is an example of something which is made up of substance, which is not empty. Now take a thought, and you will see some words and some feelings, emotions, some concepts, some imaginary ideas, some pictures, sounds. These are thoughts. Thoughts are simply echoes of memory. So, the memory is manifesting like this in the form of a thought. The thought is gone now. What is left? Hopefully, whatever it was made up of is still left. But if you search, you will find nothing. Now there is a new thought, and there also nothing is left when it is gone. So, thoughts are an example of emptiness. Your thoughts are empty. You have no substance in your thought, and that can sound insulting, but that is the truth. You can clearly see that the thoughts were coming out of memory, and memories are not made up of anything. So, this is the Law of Emptiness. Can you break this law? It is impossible. Everything that appears anywhere in this existence, whole of your life is going to be empty. You cannot break this law. Can you rise above this Law of Emptiness? Yes. Not by making the memory out of somethingnot possibleby realizing that everything is impermanent and changing. Everything is fleeting, goes away, and you yourself are one of that fleeting structures, impermanent, momentary. So, you can rise above it by knowing that which remains when everything that is changing changes, when this river of change flows, what remains? It is very easy, actually: the witnessing aspect of the existence remains, is unchanging. We discussed it briefly in part number one of the series. This illusion is so attractive that it is hypnotizing, and we forget that there is another aspect of the existence, which is the witnessing aspect, also called the experiencer, and that never changes. You can rise above the Law of Emptiness by seeing the impermanence of the experience, by not getting confused by the reality of the experiencethey are not realand by searching for the substance within you. That witnessing aspect is nothing but you. When the changing experiences come and go, that which is left behind is not a substance; it is you, the witness, the experiencer. So, although it is called a Law of Emptiness, it is not applicable to you. You are the substance. This witness is the substance, or the essence. What is the definition of essence? That which never changes, that without which no form can appear. Forms do not exist without the essence, without the substance. There is only one like this in the entire existence. There is not any experience, there is not any memory, there is not any structure that is the witness, the experiencer. Where is it? It is you. All the experiences are appearing in you, all these memories, all these vibrational patterns. They are appearing on your screen. The screen itself never changes. The screen is the substance. Substance means that which stands below, the foundation. So, this is called self-realization. It is necessary if you want to transcend the emptiness of impermanent experiences. What will this do? This will cause detachment with that which comes and goes. That will free you from the bondage of what was wrongly assumed to be true and with substance. For example, if somebody gives you a million in the form of banknotes, it is very natural to have some kind of attachment to that money. Next day, they tell you that these notes are fake, they are counterfeit notes, there is no substance there. The money is of no value, empty. Your hands are now empty. Although something is appearing there, appearance of money, but there is no attachment there. You don't have to do anything with it now; it's gone. So, you let go. This frees you from the suffering that emptiness of the experience causes. Grasping after empty experiences is like holding on to fake money. It will buy nothing; it gives no happiness. The real happiness is in letting go and being what you are. That which you are is not an experience, not memory. So, this is how you transcend the immaterial memory. The interesting thing is, when you ask this question: "What is the essence of the experiencer?" you probably get no answer, because we already said that the experiencer is the essence. But some people will say that since there are no qualities in the experiencer, the experiencer is also empty. So, it seems like we reached a new level of emptiness, but the law is not broken, ultimately. It was like this before also. Somehow, some other forms appeared, and there was an identification with these changing, illusory forms because of limitedness and sensory limits, limits of knowledge and intelligence. We say there was an ignorance that I am this changing form, whatever form it is: human form, animal form, vegetables, plants, rocks, whatever. So, that ignorance happened somehow. Instead of being infinite emptiness, I became a limited, non-emptiness, solidity of some kind, which was impermanent, illusory. That was the fall. Now you need to rise above. Know yourself, know who you are, and you can transcend this somewhat disturbing condition. Although nothing was lost in this play of illusion, the whole memory remained empty, nothing actually happened there, and you also remained empty, nothing actually happened there, no fall. So, now you can laugh, smile. So, we just finished the whole spiritual journey of any great seeker in five minutes. It is so easy. So, we'll stop here today, and we'll continue with other laws in the next part.
