Joy

A shared smile, a song, a dance, or a thing of beauty-a sunrise, sunset, or a quiet moment in nature; a sense of wonder or awe through creativity, mathematics, science, or marvelous engineering; perceiving or being part of an expression of love, an act of kindness, or even the warm touch of a mother (or her scolding!) can bring immense Joy.

Joy is deep, enduring, and rooted. It is a satisfying, enriching experience that can arise from connection, moments of love or wonder, unspoken bonds, meaning, living in alignment with ones values and purpose, and gratitude. More often than not, it is independent of external circumstances, and we are unable to exactly identify its source. We are free to search for a reason, but even if we try hard, we may not find one. Joy is acausal, yet undeniably present ,the moment we try to pin down its exact cause , it slips away.

When you are free, unrestricted, and unbound, you feel joyous just like children who feel free when their parents are away from home (no wonder , Home Alone remains a Christmas favorite). You can say whatever you want, just like a toddler who has recently learned to speak. When you have the freedom to make mistakes without fear of judgment, you feel accepted as you are. You feel whole that is joy.

There is no process that can produce joy, but you can be joyous in any process if it becomes playful, creative, and meaningful for you. At best, what you can do is prepare the ground, sow the seed, and remain open to the possibility of joy. There are various activities that can invite joy
-Celebrate someone elses happiness, or simply witness expressions of love and warmth.
-Listen to reflections on purpose and meaning.
-Make a gratitude list.
-Perform spontaneous, unconditional acts of kindness.
-Try something new for sometime, Same as you learn to ride a bicycle
-Experience moments of awe: when you encounter something remarkable or beautiful that moves you, pause and bask in its presence or Better still -when you see something extraordinary, pause and allow yourself to be deeply moved by it.

You should not go out desperately searching for such moments. But when they naturally arise, pause, savor, and celebrate them. **Promise yourself** that whenever such an opportunity appears, you will stop and witness life in its full glory. Make this your habit, and gradually you will realize that life offers more and more opportunities to become joyous.

*Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day. Henri Nouwen*

**Joy Ladder**

You are intrinsically creative.you want to express and share. When you do so, you feel joyous. But the game of survival, along with unnecessary desires, gradually veils the deeper joy already present within life itself and its capricious manoeuveres. The Joy Ladder is not a method to manufacture joy, but a gentle way of removing the inner noise, resistance, and heaviness that veil this natural joy, allowing you to reconnect with your innate playfulness, presence, creativity, and wholeness.

1. Be Aware of Your Emotions (Notice)
Pause for a few seconds.
Observe what is present within you- tired, disturbed ,restless, agitated
Notice bodily sensations as well.

2. Acceptance (Allow)
Drop resistance -This shouldnt be happening.
Stop trying to fix everything immediately.
Let it be.

3. Calm Baseline (Regulate)
Take 56 slow, deep breaths.
Relax your body.
Do a simple calming exercise.
Slightly slow down your pace.

4. Gratitude Spark (Reframe)
Find one small thing that is okay or good.
It can be very ordinary.
Let yourself genuinely notice it for a few seconds.

5. Lightness (Play)
Smile gently or laugh at yourself.
Drop unnecessary seriousness.
Treat the moment as exploration rather than burden.

6. Shift Inside Out and Connect (Expand)
Change your physical environment.
If you have been outside for too long, return to a safe and comforting space.
Take a bath, dip your feet in warm or cold water, or put on some soothing music.
After some time, talk to someone who calms and comforts you.
Or
If you have been confined indoors (home or office), step outside for a walkeven on an ordinary street.
Stand still for a moment and watch the world move around you. Most likely, you will notice a small spark of life.
Have tea, coffee, or ice creamwhatever soothes you , by yourself if needed.

7. Express (Anchor Action)

Do one small uplifting act:

Move your body

Speak
Write
Create
Sing
Stretch
Sketch
Color
Paint
Cook

When you are joyous, you naturally become creative, expressive, and willing to share. And when you create, express, and share, you feel joy. They mutually reinforce one another.

With practice, the Joy Ladder reveals that it is not really a ladder at allit is an upward spiral, where one small shift gently invites the next.Even if you complete only a few steps and manage to come out of the rabbit hole, consider yourself successful.
So , what are you waiting for

Take out your crayons.
Hop on the swing
Tag a friend *
go for a ride
Put on your dancing shoes
Hum your forgotten song again.

*One joy scatters a hundred griefs. Chinese proverb*
