# Laws of Memory Part 09 Welcome to Pure Experiences. This is a series on Laws of Memory. Today we are going to discuss the sixth law, and it is named the Law of Probability. ## Introduction to the Law of Probability As you know, the meaning of the word probability is simply the chances of some event happening, the odds. And it can be mathematically measured, and we have a full branch of mathematics devoted to probability. And many people will think, except gambling, and sports, and weather forecast, what is the use of this probability in my life, and why this is being called a law? Many people will say, "I rarely see it. I don't use it." But if you look closely, you will see that every event that happens in this whole existence has a probability associated with it. The opposite of the word probability is certainty. Now it becomes bright as a day if you recall the Law of Uncertainty, which was called the Law of Deniability. If uncertainty is the law, how can there be any certain events? There can only be probable events. ## Probability as a Consequence of Uncertainty and Potential So this law is a direct consequence of uncertainty, which we explained in previous parts of this series. When we describe the existence, we describe it as infinite potential. Of course, the essence is empty, but that which is manifested is also empty. And the explanation for why it is manifested is infinite potential. We never call it infinite certainty. It is potential. So potentially, something gets manifested. So in mathematical language, you can say that in this existence there is a probability of some event happening. Any specific event has a probability associated with it because the underlying substrate is lacking a certainty, lacking a solidity. It is empty, it is potential. So logically it is very easy to see why, why this must be a law. There cannot be anything else. Any event cannot be 100% certain, and it cannot be 0% also. This is very strange. Probability is sometimes measured as percentage. What are the chances of something happening out of 100 trials, that is measurable. What happens in the memory? This contemplation can bring out a lot of secrets and can show you directly why only probable events happen in the memory. Memory means semi-stable vibrations. The patterns in the memory are not solid. They are not etched on a rock. They are vibrating, oscillating, non-physical, non-mental, immaterial, not in time, not in place. What can you expect will happen in this kind of memory? Can something certain take place here? Think about it. What does your intuition say? ## The Complex and Fleet-Footed Nature of Memory Moreover, everything is fleeting and impermanent. Moreover, there are many laws. It becomes sometimes very difficult to find out which law got applied here. Mostly it is a combination of many laws. But actually all the laws get applied, or all the laws are followed, nothing is broken. Still, sometimes becomes beyond human intellect. When things cannot be measured certainly, we use probability. This is general knowledge. When systems become so complicated in memory that measurement of the memory, or sensing, becomes difficult, too complex, then we measure the event as a probability. So some events in the memory are so complicated, they are a result of so many causes and effects, laws, permutations, combinations, that the only measurement that is possible sometimes is probability of it happening. So the vibrations being non-physical, non-mental, they are all intertwined, interconnected, they influence each other infinitely over infinite distances and infinite times. And here we must surrender our limited idea of certainty and accept probability. A simple person will think in terms of certainty: if A then B, if B then C, linear. This is called linear thinking. But the memory, or the manifested existence, does not work like this. When a event happens, there are almost infinite causes behind it. What can you say about it? You can only predict. You can only try to guess the chances or probability. We are going to study the laws of cause and effect, which is called the Karmic Law, and also the Law of Interconnectedness, or the Law of Oneness, which will show the Law of Probability more clearly: why this needs to be probable, why all the events that happen in memory are not 100% certain, there is always a probability of happening something in the memory. If you contemplate on it, you will know. See what is memory, why our linear thinking and limited intellect fails. We need to adopt uncertainty or probability eventually, as soon as we cross some events that are really simple, really trivial, we need to take shelter under mathematics of probability. ## From Predetermination to Randomness Many people will say here that, "No, I know many events that are 100% certain. For example, if I throw a rock in air, 100% certain it will come down. If I throw a ball at a wall, 100% certain it bounces back. And many such examples: it is 100% certain that the water will flow down, not up. It is 100% certain that a mango tree will produce only mango, not a banana." So now we got the contradiction. Without contradictions, there is no fun in any philosophy. So we need to add a dimension to the probability. The probability is not a simple probability. It ranges from predetermination to randomness, and everything in between. Predetermination will mean a probability of 100% or 1, and randomness will mean a probability of 50%, 0.5. A probability of 0, 0%, also means predetermination, but in opposite sense. So you must keep this in mind that 100% and 0%, they will fall in the category of certain. Certainly something is known. And randomness will be around 50%. It's called 50/50 chance. Any event in the memory does not have a fixed probability. It ranges from 0 to 100, as the probability cannot be more than 100%, more than 1, cannot be less than 0. So in short, you can say that our experience ranges from complete predetermination to complete randomness. And there is a huge spectrum of probabilities that we find if we study various kinds of events that happen, phenomena that take place in memory, and that includes everything here: physical, non-physical, mental, non-mental, everything. The Law of Probability says that in the memory all kinds of probabilities will be found. So now you can guess why that is the case: because it is infinite. The manifestation is infinite; there are no limits. So obviously, the chances of something happening is not bound in a range of probabilities. Now there is a very funny thing: the predetermination never reaches 0% or 100%, and the randomness never reaches exact 50%. The event that we think is 100% predetermined is never 100%, although we'll never come to know, we'll never experience the other probabilities. And the event that you think is completely random is never completely random. In mathematics we call it asymptotic, or the probability approaches 0 or 100, and it approaches 50, but never becomes an exact number. I need not go in too much detail because our talk will become somewhat boring, and unnecessary detail will be there. The main point I'm going to tell you: those who are interested, they can dig more. And a lot of philosophers and scientists have found out, it is a proven thing. And the reason is again infinity and multidimensional nature of memory. If something is fixed, must happen, probability of 100%, and that tells you something about the memory, that that gives you a certain knowledge. And according to our laws of deniability and uncertainty and so on, that is not allowed. It is very frustrating. So we'll find something, some events which are approaching 100%, 99.999%, it then never become 100. We find something which is almost random, equal chance of happening, but it is always 49.998 or 50.0001. We cannot even find a certain probability of it. Even the probability is not certainly calculated. You can see now how complicated things are becoming. Whatever we dismiss as a dream or illusion is something very complex, difficult to understand. And now we can add one more dimension into the probability: that probability is impermanent. It keeps changing. Today, an event was let us say 10% probable; tomorrow, it will be 20%; day after tomorrow, 1%; after one year, 90%. Same event. So now it looks like that we need to give up. Nothing can be measured, nothing can be known, and it's all probable. Even the strict probability is not found. And if we try to measure it at different times, we get different answers. What is going on? Can we know anything? Can you measure anything? That is mind-boggling. If you start thinking like this, you won't be able to sleep. What do I really know? What am I seeing here? What is happening in my life? These questions don't have answers. Or you can say jokingly, probably you'll find the answer. There's a probability of finding an answer. ## The Dreamlike Experience of Everyday Probabilities Now everybody will relate to this. Why nothing works in our society, in our families, in our countries? That's your everyday experience. All you need to do is get up in the morning and go to work. So many improbable events happen, including power cut, internet dropping, unexpected rain, unexpected guest, your servant not showing up or showing up exactly when you want to go out, your dog breaking something. Then when you go out in traffic, almost supernatural kind of events will be seen because now the other complexities of other lives add into the flow of traffic. And the whole day then is like a slot machine game, gamble. In the end, there is probably little bit of achievement. Probably you wanted to do 10 things, you managed to do one or two, and you go to sleep. That sounds like a dream. Sometimes I remember my dreams, and they are exactly like this in nature. Nobody knows what is happening in the dream, although it is made by me. You can roughly say that it is made by nobody, but the ego takes the responsibility: "I dreamed this." But it is just a hairball of meaningless events, meaningless pictures. Our daily life is mostly like that. Take a look. But since we are so used to this hairball of events, which is called our lives, we don't mind. We think everything is normal. It is not normal. It is anything but normal. ## The Normal Distribution (The Bell Curve) So that brings us to the normal distribution. I don't know why it is called normal, it is found everywhere. This distribution of probabilities looks like a bell. It is also called the bell curve or Gaussian curve. You must have seen it many places. Those who study science and mathematics, and also economics, social science, even medicine, they all know this curve. It is famous, and it is infamous. It shows the distribution of probabilities from 0 to 1. This curve is usually plotted for distribution of data, distribution of measurements. Let us say heights of people in this world. So if you measure a lot of people, their heights, most of them come out to be between 5 to 6 feet. That becomes the peak of the curve. And there will be really short people at one end, they will be less. And there will be really tall people on the other end, they will be also less. So the probability of finding a person of a given height is measured here. That means the event of finding a certain height of a person. We can generalize this thing, and we can say that this curve is applicable to all the events that happen in memory. If you start measuring any given event, it will show up as a bell curve, normal distribution. This is very strange. This will show up many times in events that are seemingly random. There are many videos and demonstrations of this bell curve. It is not intuitive. You cannot guess that the Gaussian will be the result for some events. For example, if you take dry sand and start pouring it on the floor, we humans expect that it will fall down and it will become simply a mess, some random shape will be there on the floor. And you will be surprised to see that if it is not, this pouring process is not disturbed by something external, like people running around or wind, then a pile of sand on the floor will take exact shape of bell curve. Most of the sand will fall under your hands, and a little bit will be scattered in the corners of the room somewhere. And if you take a photo of it, it will be like a bell. It is very interesting that this happens. So it is a law. We don't need more evidence that there is such a law. We are going to discuss this law more when we discuss the laws of repetition and 99%. These two laws are very much related to Law of Probability. ## Compound Events vs. Individual Probabilistic Events So what happened to deterministic events? Will the water not flow downwards all the time? If you measure the flow of water, direction of water, will it be always 50/50? Most of the time the water will flow in one or the other direction. Sometimes it will flow downwards? The bell curve does not fit here. Okay, so I was avoiding this kind of discussion, but this sounds like a valid objection. So I'm going to introduce a new word here. It is called a compound event, a statistical event. There are many names in science. Those who are interested should dig it out. The flow of water is not a one event. The particles of water, you can say drops of water or atoms, molecules of water, they are all adding up to form the flow of water. It is a compound event, not a single event. Now it will be very difficult to find something which is a single event, which is not compound. It is also very strange. But these kinds of events which are statistical, they happen due to activity of many entities, and their combined effect produces something which looks like predetermined. So if you take just one molecule of water, they all follow the Law of Probability, but their combined motion is downwards, seen downwards. Although if you check each and every particle of water, if you can, it will follow the bell curve. The bell curve will be seen when measuring the direction of movement of these particles. Most of them will go down. A few of them slightly left, right, up. Very few of them will go backwards, and so on. So the whole thing seems to be going down because most of them go down, but not all of them. All the molecules of the water do not move in a straight line downwards. It will never happen. So there is a predetermination in the whole, the stream of water, but there is randomness in the part, that is the molecule. Same about air, flow of air; same about crowds when they move; same about any phenomena. Totally depends on what are what are you trying to measure. If that event is a combined event, then it will seem to be deterministic sometimes. And if you measure the individual components, they will be probabilistic. ## Quantum Mechanical Scale and the Measurement Problem Now the interesting part is, if you go on dividing the event into its individual component, and more and more it becomes probabilistic. What happens when we go below the atoms and subatomic events? Something strange happens, and that it becomes impossible to measure what will happen. This is the physical uncertainty principle. It is not even probable, it becomes impossible. It is not random. Nothing can be said what what can happen there. So seemingly deterministic events are made up of minute events which cannot even be measured precisely. How amazing is that? It is completely beyond our intelligence now. Our linear thinking says that if there is complete randomness, you cannot even measure individual particles, then the final outcome of that thing, which is made up of those particles, will be complete randomness. But no, thanks to the Law of Probability, there is something, something meaningful. So for example, if you take a flower pot, clay pot, each atom of that clay pot is a vibrational pattern in the memory because it is undeterministic, uncertain, deniable, probable. These clay atoms cannot be measured. They are changing, they are vibrating, they are everywhere in the existence at the same time. They are present throughout the history and future at the same time. What is there? Almost nothing which we can grasp. But Law of Probability says that this particular particle has a probability to be present here and now in this space, this time. That's all can be measured. This particle will be seen in this particular place in this particular time, that much can be said. And if you add up trillions and trillions of particles, you get a clay pot because there is some probability of them being in that shape. So the problem is we don't even understand what is a clay pot. It happens to be there by chance. So many people must have already guessed, this is the quantum theory. If you take example of our physical world, which is not physical, it is memory, because this is our direct experience, we see that every event here is a compound event, probabilistic. And if you break it down, you get smaller events. We call them particles, atoms, subatomic particles, and so on. They are not particles. You're simply measuring smaller and smaller quantities, parts of the memory. You are approaching the primordial vibration by focusing your instrument. There is no atom, there is no molecule. Give up this outdated view of the illusion. Some people call it reality. There is no reality here. So if you try to measure this thing, you get this random noise. But because the combined effects come out to be something proper, which is meaningful, sometimes even deterministic, we don't call it random. What do we call it then? We call it quantum mechanical events. All such events at this scale are quantum mechanical. They are all probabilistic. They are all non-physical. There is nothing physical to measure there, only effects that influence each other. That's all there is. Nothing much is measured there except probability. And if there is nobody to observe, if there are no senses, nothing is created. This is the law of perception-creation. There is only probability. Nothing is manifested. This is the famous measurement problem of physics. If you probe deeply, you will find that there is nothing, and there is nothing to measure. But somehow the combined effect produces a phenomenon, thanks to the Law of Probability. Everything that exists in the existence exists probably, which means that it is there, but it is not there. This is the exact meaning of the word illusion, Maya. However, this physical world is not physical as we use this word. It is non-physical. Every other world is like this. There are many worlds. So the worlds are seen when a specific set of senses is present. So if you change the senses, you start measuring something else, and a different world appears. So whatever we are imagining and whatever we are theorizing and discussing is not totally airy-fairy. It is not some magical tantric, occult gossip. We arrived at something really useful. The conclusions now match that of many centuries of scientific discoveries, with no contradictions or apparent contradictions. So when you switch to another world, you will see the same Law of Probability. There is a probability of something appearing depending on what is there in the memory. It is a flowing structure, memory. Something appears depending on how probabilities, what happened before it, and so on, chain of cause and effect. Still nothing is certain, and nothing is random. ## Senses as Filters of Randomness We'll check this randomness part a little bit, and then we'll stop talking about it because it is hurting my head. So why nothing can be absolutely random? This is debatable. We throw our weapons and give up, accept the defeat when the causes that influence an event become too many to understand, to calculate. Even the probability cannot be determined properly, and we call it random. And as we go deeper into the vibration, the basic vibration, this randomness increases, because nothing can be certainly said what is there. But the overall effect of a combined event sometimes produces randomness, but that is simply because our senses, our instruments, our intellect, big machines, computers, they cannot find all the causes that determined that event. So we say a random occurrence, chance happening. This has no scientific value except in encryption and computer security. So our senses actually filter out the randomness. Anything which they cannot measure is thrown out. Something is changing too quickly to produce any kind of meaningful model of it is thrown out, filtered out. So for example, the ears stop hearing above 20 kilohertz because then the sound changes too quickly. It is all random noise after that for the ears, or this system of senses, body-mind. The ear can sense a difference between 100 Hertz and 200 Hertz. Remember, the ear is simply a differential detector. It does not detect anything absolute because the difference is twice now, 100 to 200. But it won't be able to sense the difference between 10,100 and 10,200 Hertz. Not much, there is not much qualitative difference. And if you multiply that 10 times, there is absolutely no difference for the ears. So if it cannot differentiate one signal from another, it filters it out. It is non-existing. How many sounds can be there? Infinite. But the ear stops at 20 kilohertz. Same way, eyes cannot detect beyond a certain color: violet, ultraviolet, whatever. And there is a lower limit also. So everything above and below the ranges of senses is random for us. Is it really random? And how much is there? Infinite. So if you simply change the sense, you can get infinite kind of signal. Infinite worlds are possible. But for a human being, it is a sea of randomness. Why? Because we do not detect it. We do not differentiate. And we are not capable of sensing it. So it looks like randomness. It is not randomness. Isn't it? For another creature, another instrument, another sense, there is a corresponding world, probable world. So deterministic is not deterministic, random is not random. It's a very beautiful poetry. It's all probability. Then there are many funny examples that come out of science. Science says that if you throw a ball at the wall, there is a 99% chance that it will hit the wall, come back to you. But there is a very small chance that it will pass through the wall. Now, nobody believes this, but this is scientific conclusion. But it is a metaphor. If you make the ball very small, like an electron, it will mostly pass through the wall. If you apply a strong potential or electric field on the other side of the wall, most of the time it will pass through the wall. It is like a gravity where the water most of the time flows to the center of the earth. Something is pulling it. The laws of physical world, they totally depend on at what level we are talking. Hardly there is any law now. Anything can happen. But the Law of Probability will hold. So whatever we think is the lawphysical law, and even psychological laws are thereand they are not real laws. The real laws are this: laws of the memory. And they are also not fixed because there is infinite set of these laws. So ultimately, it's all mysterious. ## Rising Above Probability: Shifting the Bell Curve What we can do is, instead of fighting the probability, we can rise above it. In simple words, rising above the Law of Probability means shifting the bell curve to wherever we desire. It is very simple. It will be bell curve always, you cannot fight it, but you can shift it. You can shift it in the desired direction. You can shift the peak of the curve towards whatever outcome you want. That is possible, and that is also a very big achievement if you can do that. Or you can increase or decrease the tightness of the curve, the width of the curve. If the curve is spread out, you won't be able to say anything most of the time what will happen. But if the curve is narrow, then the peak is higher, and something can be told what can happen. So the things that you don't want, you want that bell curve to spread out. They will never go away, but you can make it less probable. And things you want, you can narrow down, concentrate the bell curve, and most of the time they will happen, but never always. This much is possible. How to do that? This is called proper action. This will be more clear when we discuss the law of action, Karmic Law. You can call it the right action. If you continuously do the right action, the bell curve will shift, the probability can be changed. It is possible to change the probability in both negative and positive directions. You can avoid some things, and you can tend towards something, you can favor something, some event. So for example, there is a very unusual event that happens here, it's called a disease. So I'm giving a practical example: there is always a chance of getting a disease. If you think, "I don't want this kind of disease," let us say an infection, viral infection. If you go out, live your ordinary life, it's always 50/50 that you will get one or other kind of infection from other people, etc., etc. So we start enforcing our intention: "I don't want this," you say. You start shifting the bell curve towards 0% by doing the right action. And what is the right action? I need not tell you: stay away from people, meet as less people as possible, and personal hygiene, medicines, a little bit of knowledge of how the viruses work, and a little bit of knowledge of the symptoms, because if you see the symptom, you treat it quickly, so on. And for most of your life you'll avoid it. Why? Because you're you're shifting the probability of it happening. Same way, you are a pilot, you want to fly a plane, commercial plane, successfully. There are 100 people in the plane, you don't want to kill all of all of them. So you want to increase the probability of the successful flight to 100%, you do the right action. It requires a lot of intelligence to find the right action, and do it consistently without missing it, without making a mistake. So it is like a training. It is as good as training to become a pilot. You cannot afford a mistake. Same way, if you want to be successful in the business, start doing the right action. Every day you go to your office or factory or whatever, and keep doing the right action. Keep shifting the probability of success towards your goal. And the combined event will give you the desired results. Not every day. It's not possible. It's it's not possible that everything you do will be complete success. Never happens. It's seemingly random, like a dream. You can already see that the force that is needed here is that of intention. Intention is simply your will, willpower, or power of your desire. How much you desire that. More you desire that, the more intention you put, the more probable it becomes. It is the central component of magic, or tantra. But when I say it like this, it sounds plain and simple. There is no real magic, actually. This is how we manipulate the laws. Magic is nothing but manipulation of laws of memory. So these are simple examples that you can immediately put in practice. Have a very strong intention. The intention produces a lot of power and energy. It forces the probability in the direction of your intention. This is our everyday life. The more complex the event is, the less control there is. It will go random, or it anything can happen if it is too complex. For example, marriages, relationships, and so on. For something which is simple, like selling fruits or your work, you can bias that probability more effectively. There is more control. As soon as more people are involved, more variables are there, it is all hit and trial. The bell curve will not budge. It will not shift too much. So right intention, at the right time, right place: this is the key. This is the secret formula. Never waste your power or energy on something which you cannot control, where you cannot shift the probability. It will be waste of time. So these things are well known. Every intelligent person knows how to conduct their lives: let go of that where the probability game is totally beyond human beings, and focus on that which is within your range. ## Micro-Manifestation Okay, so more esoteric and more tantric, magical way to rise above the Law of Probability is called micro-manifestation. As we saw in our previous discussion on manifestation, creation, and the probability will not allow you to manifest exactly, even magically, even if you have magical powers, superpowers, the probability law is applicable. So we take advantage of probability again, statistics, and we apply our abilities to manifest at a micro level, because there is more permission at the micro level, like I said. At the atomic level, sub-particle, subatomic particle level, and the ball can go through the wall. It is magic. The "ball and wall ritual", scientists will call it. So you can do your own micro-ritual. Wherever microscopic manifestation is possible, you do it, and you keep doing it for a long time, and the overall effect, the combined event manifests according to your will, according to your intention. This is also called biasing the probability. Keep doing small things because you know that, "I won't be able to directly change everything in the world to produce the outcome that I desire." So you start doing something small. You want to build a house? You put one brick per day. That's all. One day the house will be finished, assuming that you don't have the power to build the whole house in one day. What are the use cases for this micro-manifestation where things are beyond our control, beyond human? For example, you want to achieve liberation from the human lineage. Now no amount of knowledge, personal hygiene, avoiding peopleno, these worldly matters will not help here. Your day-to-day intelligence is of no use. Your abilities, no use. Your strength, your knowledge, useless. How can how is it even possible that I transcend the human form? I only heard about it. So micro-manifestation. You will need a proper practice. For that you will need a proper guide, called a guru, probably who has already done this thing, a great tantric master. Start doing the practice. Micro-manifestation: change yourself microscopically, small changes per day, per week, per month. And then you will reach a point where you will be finally be able to drop the human form. Now, I gave this example, but I have not done this myself. I'm in a human form, so I don't guarantee anything. But micro-manifestation is a matter of experimentation. Nothing is certain. You can do micro-manifestation whole of your life, but it can happen that it fails. So do many micro-manifestations, you see. Use the Law of Probability. Once you know the law, you can use it. If you don't know it, you will become a slave of it. The probability will make you dance according to the Gaussian curve, the normal dance. If you know this law, you know how to utilize it. One micro-manifestation in one direction, well, it sounds like I'm putting all my eggs in one basket. So we do many things in parallel, many micro-manifestations in parallel. Now, the examples of this and how to do this is beyond the scope of this public discussion. All of this advanced practice is given to only the advanced practitioner of Tantra, not to everybody. Because firstly, it is not allowed. Secondly, this is a powerful technique, it can be misused. Thirdly, the seeker or the practitioner must be of a certain kind, must reach a certain level of evolution to use it. Otherwise, they end up harming themselves. You don't know what you're doing, obviously. Somebody who is not evolved enough has no knowledge of these super-physical events. And if you manipulate something there using micro-manifestation or whatever you do, shifting of probabilities, something harmful can happen. Some damage can happen. So I don't recommend it too much. Use this law in your everyday life. Use the power of the human body-mind machine. First, start learning at that level. So you can create simple events using this technique, but you can create the whole world using micro-manifestation. And as an example, you can check our own world, whatever we call as physical world. It is not put into place, everything at once. It is micro-manifestation. Everything is drifting away a bit, it is biased so precisely that it stays as it is for a long time. Obviously, that which is manifested disappears. So your micro-manifestation can disappear anytime. We continue doing it. Manifestation is not a one-time process. Creation is not a one-time process. You need to keep creating it, which is called maintenance, persistence, and you need to keep copying it, which is the use of another law of copy, repetition. ## Conclusion So hopefully the laws and their discussion is not getting too complicated, it is not causing too much confusion. Yes, I know for a newcomer it will be too much to grasp. So take the help of your own direct experience. Use your own intelligence to verify these laws. Then you will be able to rise above them. You must understand the working of these laws through the direct experience. So we'll continue our discussion on other laws of memory in next part.
