# Laws of Memory - Part 05 Welcome to Pure Experiences. This is a series on Laws of Memory. The second law that we are going to discuss is Law of Necessity. ## 2 - Law of Necessity Necessity in philosophy is defined as that except which nothing else can happen, nothing else can be, nothing else can appear. What is that? It can be events, it can be things, it can be any experience, it can be any law. If nothing else is possible, we are left with only one choice, one option, we say that that is necessary. This meaning is slightly different from our everyday meaning, so you should pay attention. If something happened by necessity, in philosophy, it is because nothing else was possible. So, this is also called law of efficiency or law of perfection. We say that the universal memory is efficient. It is not doing anything which is not necessary. That is the meaning of efficiency. The universal memory, there is only one, never does anything which is not needed, which is not necessary, which is optional. Only one thing happens if it must happen; nothing else happens. This is also called perfection, because now there is no scope of removing something, altering something, or adding something. That is the definition of perfection. That event which happened, the phenomena which happened, is perfect because you cannot make it better, or you cannot have anything else except that. How is that possible? Because just now we said there are infinite options, infinite freedom, anything can happen. Now how can we say that only the necessary happens? So, it is tricky, but anything can happen and then that anything, when it happens, is always necessary. It's perfection by default. You cannot have imperfection in the memory. ## Example - Circle So, probably some examples will help here. Let us say a structure appeared, again we take circle. Any point on the circle must be at the same distance from the center, otherwise there is no circle. So if there is a circle, it is necessary that the points cannot be at any other distance. No other option is there. Although any shape can appear in this existence, infinite memory, they will be bound by their own necessities. But here in the case of circle, it is necessary for the points to be the same distance. Is the circle perfect? Yes, because you cannot make it perfect by adding or removing anything in the circle. You cannot say, "Let me add this line here, and it will become a perfect circle." No, it won't remain a circle. It is perfect. You cannot say, "Let me remove something, some part of the circle. It will become beautiful circle, perfect circle." No, you cannot. It is already perfect. The law is perfect. Cannot change it now. There is no error there. There is no scope of improvement there. Is it efficient? Yes. To form that circle, whatever minimal was needed was already done. You draw the circle, it is done. You don't need to work on the circle for one more year to make it perfect. Efficiency: do it once, done. So, any structure that appears in the memory is because of necessity, nothing else can happen regarding that structure, and it is done efficiently, it is always perfect. Now that contradicts our observation, direct experience, that everything is changing. If it was necessary, if it was perfect, why is it changing? Very serious objection. So, the answer is very simple: that change is necessary, that change is happening perfectly, that change is happening efficiently. Do not restrict yourself with a static memory, static structure. Do not think in a limited way. Yes, these examples and metaphors, they can limit your intelligence a little bit, limit your thinking, but you can again take example of something which is in motion, which is changing. And you will again find the laws of necessity and efficiency and perfection. ## Example - River So, we'll take an example of something which is changing and moving, flowing. A very beautiful example is a river. The law of the river says water goes in downward direction. No other law there. Water, if if it is left somewhere, it will flow in a downward direction. It will minimize the potential energy, in terms of science. That's all. Science will say it is necessary because the gravity is pulling. Actually, nothing is pulling it. These are all imaginary concepts. This is the law. But it changes, it flows, but whenever it flows, it flows only downwards. It will never flow upwards. Sometimes it stops somewhere, but that means that depression is filling up. It looks like the water is rising up. It is not an exception to the rule. It is still flowing down. When it overflows, again flow starts. The direction the river takes towards the sea is not arbitrary. The river does not have options, and it is flowing in the most efficient way. The river will never say, "I'll go uphill for one kilometer just for a change, and then I'll go down." The river never says like this. It is so efficient that even one drop of the river will not flow against the law. Always finds the shortest route to the lower point, and again and again and again. This is what makes it flow. Is the river perfect? Now, the perfection is defined by the landscape. You can always see that the river is like a snake. It is snaking through the valleys and it's never straight. You can say, "Look at this map. I can draw a point from here to the sea, shortest distance, done, perfect. That is more efficient. That was necessary. The river could have done that." But when you're looking at the map, which is flat, you are ignoring the landscape. Landscape is not flat. So, given that landscape, it was only necessary to follow all those points, or the path of the river is already fixed. It follows the landscape with perfection. You cannot do any changes, given the landscape. Yes, if you change the landscape, yes, new order arises, new perfection is seen. If you change the landscape, the river will not say, "Oh, the the first path was perfect. I I should not change." But no, now it adapts to the new landscape perfectly. So, hopefully that gives you some idea of the law of necessity, efficiency, and perfection. Some people break it down into three laws, it's perfectly okay. If you can understand it by breaking it down in three ways, it's okay. In my view, the this is only one law. Necessity is perfection. Efficiency is also perfection. Perfection is necessary. Perfection is efficient. Think about it. ## Example - Human Being So, now we move to the very important point: Is my life perfect? Nobody wants to know about the circles and rivers. Okay, they are perfect. Look at me, it's not perfect. Well, we have a good and bad news, as usual, paradoxical. Your life is perfect. It is the same life which was most necessary. It is the highly efficient life. Whatever you are, whatever you do as a human being, forget the experiencer, it does nothing. Experiencer is useless here. You are a human right now, so let's assume that. Why is my life imperfect? I can see all the imperfection. How can you say it is perfect? I can see inefficiency, waste of all kinds in all the lives of everybody. I can see people doing unnecessary things: crimes, and violence, and bad habits, and so on. How is that perfect? Even I'm not perfect. This is the objection. Now, I don't know what kind of fantasy you have about perfection, but this life cannot be anything else given the memory. Which memory? Not the memory where you store phone numbers and names and the garbage of your school. No. The memory which is behind this human form. Some people call it the causal memory, higher memory, higher self, there are many names. Probably we can discuss it somewhere else. So, given the impressions that were in the memory, and the outcome of it is happening due to necessity, nothing else can happen. Now you need very deep contemplation. What is in my memory? What is happening? But that still does not answer the question of imperfection. The imperfection that you perceive in your life or other lives is also perfect. It is imperfection from your imaginary idea of perfection. It is imperfection when compared to your own imaginary idea of perfection. It is not wrong to have an imaginary idea of perfection. It is not wrong. That is also perfect. But the imperfection is simply a comparison between your thought and what is happening. Comparison of thought and perception. The intellect says, "No, it is not matching my ideal thought, so it is labeled as imperfection." This whole event of comparison, not matching, and saying this intellectual conclusion is perfect. Nothing else could have happened. So, there are layers of imperfection on the perfection, and there is the final layer of perfection again. Finally, it sorts out. ## Example - Habits So, let us take an example of overeating. Most many people will understand this example. Usually people understand the examples related to eating, money, partners, and so on. They do not like other examples. So, overeating is seen in a person and everybody, including that person, concludes it is not perfect, it is not efficient, it is not necessary also. The body survives in half the food that you are eating. Now the body is sick, ugly, slow, intelligence is low. So, how can you say that this structure in the memory is perfect? How can you say that? Well, nobody should say that, it's not practical. But if you take a look at the memory deeply, there are impressions in the memory that say, "Eat more to get more happiness." Remember the impressions? There are two kinds: knowledge and ignorance. So, there is this knowledge somehow in the memory that appeared: eating more equals more happiness. And you can see that it's not knowledge, it is ignorance. It is causing a destruction. It has triggered a destructive process there. That person will not remain with all that happiness. Soon it will be gone because of all that destruction, diseases, and imperfection. But given this impression there, which must have formed due to some experiences, like the person ate sweet food and instantly the biology said, "Yes, this is the food that you need every day, every hour, every minute." That's the activity of survival. Remember the three activities? Copying, preservation, and destruction. So, preservation activity says, "Look, you need to do this. Eat. Eat the sweet food because sweetness has more nutrition." So, that activity evolved like this, and it is perfect. It is necessary. However, for a time being, the imbalance has happened and now whatever is going on perfectly from the human point of view looks like imperfect. Given this situation, given this impression, the current activity of overeating must happen. It is necessary. It is perfect. But you cannot tell this to that person. That will be not good for that person. So, you change the impression, or the natural consequence because there is imbalance and the impression changes automatically. Why? There is another law which says that there is always balance in the memory. We'll talk about that law later, Law of Balance. So, that happens ultimately: the overeating causes pain instead of pleasure. It happens, yes, perfect. This is a law. And all the disadvantages become painful over time. New impression is formed in the memory that overeating is not good now. Balanced eating, not even not eating less, you need to eat balanced diet. This is knowledge. No more ignorance. It's not that the preservation activity has stopped. No, it is not stopped. It is not overdoing it. So, new impression governs the behavior of the organism, body-mind machine. It eats less or eats optimum amount of food. The body is restored, the body is beautiful, healthy, everybody's happy, perfection. So, this recovery is also perfect. It is also necessary. And this is the happy ending. But there can be more outcomes there, that the impressions to correct fail to form. Still the Law of Balance will apply. Still the perfection or efficiency will be seen. What will happen? This body-mind, which is somehow acting perfectly, will be perfectly decimated, which means it will be destroyed. Now, nobody will agree that this is perfection. They will say this is death. But it is efficient, you see. The memory had nothing else to do, no other option. It was necessary to destroy this thing, or you can say it got autodestruct. The destruction was automatic. So, that person, if the second route is taken, will become a dead body. The dead body will be perfectly distributed in the environment as a food for other creatures. This is efficiency. That is not kept alive for more waste to happen. This is perfection. ## Example - Machines Let us take another example of a mechanical watch. The watch is running according to the physical laws. It cannot break any of the physical laws, so it is running perfectly. Let us say there is a loose spring somewhere, or rusted gears somewhere, and now the watch starts showing a wrong time. It makes a mistake. But has it broken any laws? It is running exactly according to the laws. If the spring is loose, if the tension is not there, yes, it is going to slow down. This is perfect behavior. It is not doing anything more or less than is necessary. But from a human perspective, the owner of the watch will not like it. The owner will blame the watch company or water that went into the watch, and will say it is a waste of money. The owner will say, "This is a imperfect watch, not perfect." That is simply because the watch is not doing what the human being desires. The imperfection is nothing but undesired outcome. That's all it is. The watch is not imperfect in any way. Yes, the expectations are not matching the reality, but the law is unbroken. Another example, a modern example. A programmer makes a mistake in the computer code and leaves a minus sign somewhere. Instead of adding something, he subtracts something. So, the program runs, and let us say it is running for a bank, and the outcome is somebody's account is deducted. Now there is no money in in their account. So, everybody is worried. What happened? Many such cases probably. So, everybody blames it on the computer. Computer made a mistake, computer is the culprit, it is not perfect, not working perfectly. But the situation is computer did exactly that which was stored in the memory. It ran the program exactly, perfectly, with full efficiency. The only thing is it was not desired, actually. From the human perspective, that was not expected. So, the blame goes to the computer or sometimes to the programmer. So, the plus is turned to minus. It is another perfect happening, because probably that that time the programmer was totally tired, could not think. Perfect outcome. Now the mistake is corrected, minus becomes plus, and the same computer does the same calculation perfectly. Everybody's happy. This time also everything happened perfectly, and the happiness because of the desired outcome is also perfect. So, in the whole event, nothing imperfect happened. Nothing unnecessary actually happened. It was the ignorance of the people that gave that illusion of unwanted things that happened. So, the example of computer is actually perfect, because this is how the memory works. Whatever is stored in the memory, exactly that happens, in that exact way, in complete efficiency. So, we say memory is algorithmic or it is computational. To describe some events in our world, we can actually write a program which will mimic the events. It is so perfect. The memory is so much algorithmic, mathematical, and computational that you can use mathematics and a program, algorithm, to describe our experience. That is almost magical. This kind of program will be called a simulation. And it is used in science, entertainment, and many places. You can simulate the working of a memory. It will help you to understand what can happen. It will help you to predict the outcomes. Human mind or human intellect can also do some simulations. It creates a model of what is out there, what can happen, then runs it in his or her own memory, and checks what happens. We have this power of predicting, even without knowing exactly what is happening. Since the memory is timeless, everything that can happen has already happened, and it is already stored there, perfectly. You can call this the higher beauty. The existence is beautiful, perfect, *pūrṇam* or *sundaram*, in Sanskrit. ## Imperfection There is always perfection in the memory. I know it, these kind of examples, negative examples, they are like a shock to an ordinary person, even to an ordinary seeker. But it is perfection in the eyes of a master, those who have seen in the depths of the memory. It operates like this. The seemingly imperfect is human point of view. It's bias in humans. And the seeming correction is simply another perfect event, another action of efficiency or necessity that is happening. So, there is a saying, "Everything that happens, happens for the good." Yes, it's all good. If something bad is happening, also good, because nothing else was possible given the circumstances. Your idea of perfection is also perfect, nothing wrong. Don't think that because everything is perfect, I should not do anything to make it more perfect. No, you can do. Make it more efficient. That process is also perfect. That idea coming in your mind, thought in your mind, your desire to improve is perfect. Any event that will happen after this is perfect, good or bad. Any outcome that comes out of your action of improvements is perfect. So, take a whole view, aerial view, instead of a narrow, limited view, then you will see the law of necessity is manifested. ## Rising Above Necessity Now, final analysis: How to overpower the law of necessity? No, you cannot. Law of the laws says you cannot destroy the laws, you cannot break the laws. So, it will always be necessary, whatever you do. So, how to rise above the law? Yes, that is possible. How to make yourself so perfect that you are not bothered by the imperfections? That is possible. And the trick to do that is to give up the unnecessary. Very easy, you see? When somebody's there to tell you the answer, the answer seems very easy. Otherwise, you'll keep searching for the answer whole of your life. So, masters have done that. They are teaching it. Without masters, we are nobody. So, what are they doing? Minimizing. If they see that something is happening more than necessary, they reduce it. If they see that something is happening inefficiently, they make it efficient. That is the quality of a master. You can become a master of this law. You cannot overcome the law of necessity by breaking it, by doing something which is unnecessary, by doing something which is inefficient and imperfect and not beautiful. No, that is not called overpowering. You can overpower this law by aligning with the necessity. Go ahead and do something which was really necessary, so that you can bypass this seemingly unnecessary event, sometimes that happens in our lives. A good example is you got into a fight with somebody. It is perfect, given the anger in people and so on, you see. It's all natural. Only that must happen. But a master can see that there is a shorter way, there is a efficient way. That way is called not bothering, careless way, more efficient. Although that fight and whatever events will happen, killing and so on, is completely efficient and perfect from the perspective of the memory, at lower level, lower dimension. But there is a way to rise above it and use the non-caring action. By the way, it is called forgiving. Nobody likes it. Nobody likes it, so we change the words and we call it worthlessness. Don't do it, it is worthless. Don't call it forgiving. Somebody will brand you religious person, that's not good in this world. So, we say it is not worth fighting. More efficient is to mind my own business. That is perfect. That is necessary. The fight is unnecessary. So, in this way, you avoided that event by rising above, rising above the ordinary person who will, no matter what, will fight. He will say, "It is necessary to kill this person." And not only ordinary people, many of those who are ruling you, they are also like this. Most of what they do is totally unnecessary, although it is perfect from the point of view of the whole existence. Given the intelligence of these people, they won't be able to do anything more. See, it is perfect. So, you can improve your actions by avoiding the unnecessary. That is possible simply by rising above the ordinary. Why I'm calling ordinary? Because we cannot call them lowly, nobody's lowly. Everybody is a perfect expression of the nature, Mother Nature. So, like a tiger is not a lowly creature because the tiger killed some other animal which was weaker than the tiger. A tiger will not never kill somebody who is stronger than tiger. So, but that is perfect, because nothing else can happen. Tiger needs to eat. Tiger can kill only weaker, slower animal. What is wrong? So, we cannot call that tiger a lowly tiger. We call that tiger perfect tiger, but an ordinary tiger. So, what is a more efficient tiger? Vegetarian tiger? No, I'm just joking. Sometimes these creatures, ordinary people, ordinary creatures, have no other option. Why? They're not so evolved. But a master has an option. Why? Only a master can overcome the laws or can rise above the laws. Master is more evolved. So, I'm giving you a shortcut now to rise above the law of necessity: evolve yourself. Rise above, ascend. The seeming imperfection will vanish from your life. Will it be all happy life? Will it be all dance all the way to glory? No. Even the suffering and the pain and whatever will be seen as necessary, as perfect, beautiful, efficient expression of the memory. They say that pain is necessary, but suffering is optional. Isn't it? So, you will encounter all that up and down of the life, but you will not suffer because you have risen above the suffering. That is possible only by dropping the unnecessary and letting go of the fruits of the action. We'll discuss that more in when we discuss the law of action, karmic law. But for now, by dropping the unnecessary, which you perceive as unnecessary, you have the intelligence now, you know how to rise above, you will do that action. Or that event will happen, because there is nobody to do anything, obviously. That event will happen according to the new situation of minimalism, efficiency. And whatever is the outcome, you will not suffer it because you will say, "I did my best. I did that which was necessary. Now this is the result, good or bad, we don't mind." There is no burden of the action, or you can say there is no burden of the fruits of the action. "I did what whatever was necessary." You will just wave your hands and go away. It's not worth worrying about the result. If it is good, yes, enjoy it. Don't think that I did it. "This is how it happened," you say. You again smile and go away. And the good also does not stick to you. The good is also a burden. Attachment is always a problem. It is not necessary. So, this is the key. All the events will happen as usual, but the suffering will never touch you. Breaking of this rule or overpowering the law of necessity does not mean that you do anything unnecessary. No. You do exactly that which is necessary. Sometimes nothing needs to be done: non-doing. Don't assume yourself as the doer, and everything happens that happens is already perfect. This is another level of rising up where you stop doing anything at all, or stop taking credit. The doer in you is silenced. The ego never says, "I did it." You say, "It happened, and it's all perfect now." You stop worrying about the law of necessity. When you rise above, you will find a more efficient landscape. You will find a map where you can directly connect the two points in a straight line. It is possible, because you are in a higher dimensional memory now. And if you act like that, it will look like magic to ordinary people. They won't be able to understand. They will think you are a tantrik. But you are actually tantrik, yes. But you know the magic, you know the laws. When will they that happen? When will I become like that? Yes, it takes practice. Practice does not mean repetition. Practice means improvement, perfection, and knowledge. As you practice, you know more. As you know more, you practice better. Practice changes. Practice is not repetition, mindless repetition. It is not. And you rise so high that all that you do is nothing but necessity. So, we'll stop here today and we'll continue with other laws in the next part.
