# Laws of Memory: Part 14 Welcome to Pure Experiences. You are listening to a series on Laws of Memory. Today we are going to discuss the Law of Polarity. ## 11 Law of Polarity It means some kind of pairs of opposites are manifested in this illusion, and it is always like that. This is also called the Law of Duality, which means the experiences are inherently dual; they have two aspects. These two aspects are simply points of views to see only one event or phenomenon. That's why we call it aspect, a way of looking. So, the duality is apparent. The poles or the opposites are actually one, and they differ only in degree, quantity. This is also called the Law of Gender. Gender is simply a special case of polarity, in my opinion. So, we are combining it here in the Law of Polarity, but many of the experts and wise people may want to study it separately because it is important. But for our purpose, the gender is simply some kind of duality that is seen. ### Examples of Polarity So, let us take some examples before we explain the secrets of polarity, why it manifests. A very good example is sensation of hot and cold. If something is hot, something is cold. Something is cold, something is hot. That will remind you of Law of Relativity. Hot and cold are not absolutes. That which is less hot is called cold; that which is less cold becomes hot. However, they are opposites. The cold will never be seen as hot, and the hot will never be seen as cold. But actually, they are simply degrees of temperature, degrees of heat, quantity of heat. The heat is manifested as two, apparently. There are no real two. So, the difference is due to difference in perception, sense. And therefore, the polarity is mind-created; it is not real. Similarly, bright and dark, heavy and light, positive and negative, and also purely mental events like happiness-suffering, love-hate, beautiful and ugly. One is never seen without the other. This is the key sentence here. The examples should give you an idea, and they point to your direct experience. It is impossible to find something bright if there is no darkness to compare to, but they are simply intensity of the light, two values of light. The difference is of degree. It is easy to understand, but it's not easy to understand when we take something like happiness and suffering. People will say, "No, they are totally opposite. They're two things, not one thing appearing as two." But if you take a look closely, use your direct experience, observe: happiness is simply lack of suffering; suffering is simply lack of happiness. Happiness is not an absolute state of mind. It is very easy to see now. And moreover, you can study the cases of happiness and suffering, case study. We'll go to our favorite example. Sometimes logic is enough to understand these things. So, we have a billionnaire. You give him 100 rupees. How happy will he feel? It's nothing. Probably it's suffering that you wasted his time. But you go to a beggar, give that beggar 100 rupees. It is happiness; he will be very happy. What happened? The value of money is the same. For one, it is not happiness; for other, it is happiness. Same way, for a hungry person, a stale bread is delicious food; for a well-fed person, even five-star food is boring. What happened to the pleasure and pain? They are same thing, actually. There is a difference of degree. Signals in the brain, many people will say; spiritual person will say states of the mind. One is not better than the other. They are one thing, one quality with different quantities, and the difference is very subjective, relative, and arbitrary. You need to study this more. Whatever I said in one long sentence, you will need to find some evidence for that. Similarly, love and hate: it sounds totally opposite, but one is the absence of other. One can turn into other. It's very interesting, surprising. Just like the hot can turn cold, cold can turn hot, the love can turn into hate. Sometimes it happens in one minute. It's all mind-created. Same about beauty, ugliness. And you can extend this to other concepts, especially to the spiritual concepts, because we want to emphasize the spirituality in our series. So, somebody is spiritual, religious; somebody is sinner. They are all one; there is a difference of degree. Same way, ethical-unethical, violent-non-violent, simply difference of degree. Many people will be surprised by this. It totally depends on how you define all these things. But it looks like that the mind cannot define anything without first dissecting it into pairs of opposites, because that is what is our experience. Experience is dual in nature, polar in nature. So, you can include male and female in this list. And we are not talking about the bodies here of creatures. There are some qualities that are male and female in nature, masculine and feminine. They are simply degrees of one thing, manifesting as polar opposites. ### Vibration: Polar Nature So, a bionic point of view, how can we explain? Since everything is vibration, vibrating patterns in non-physical, non-mental memory, there can be nothing else except vibration. And vibration has a fundamental quality, characteristic. It is defined as binary change: one goes in one direction, the other goes in other direction. We gave some examples: plus one, minus one, up and down, and so on. The vibration cannot be up and up. That will not be called vibration, because it does not come back; it does not complete a circle. And something which completes a circle must go in one direction, then it must come back following an opposite direction. Those who are in mathematics, they can easily prove it, probably, some kind of theorem. If it is a closed loop, it must follow two directions to return. So, you can see a sine wave. Sine wave is a very good representation of vibrations. So, the wave goes up, then falls down to zero, then goes down negative, reaches the negative point, then again goes up. Because sine wave is simply traversal of a circle. So, you immediately find polarity at the heart of vibration. And now it is easy to understand why everything has polarity in it. So, it is fundamental, and it is necessary. You cannot have unipolar experience. And probably that is why everything changes, because it cannot remain at one pole; it oscillates, because it is actually oscillation. Now it should be crystal clear: why? So yes, hot will not remain hot; it becomes cold. The cold will not remain cold; it becomes hot. Everything changes. Nothing will remain positive, positive, positive; it's impossible. It must return to zero and then to negative. The happiness will not remain happiness forever. It will come down to some boringness, ordinariness, and then it will turn to suffering. It is guaranteed because of this law. And that is like throwing cold water on somebody's hope of finding the happiness. My suggestion is: still there is time, wake up now. Stop being so foolish. Stop chasing happiness, running away from suffering. They are illusions. Yes, but some people will not understand. They will keep chasing happiness by fulfillment of desires or whatever they think is happiness. It is an illusion. It is like chasing a rainbow, chasing a shadow. So, no problem, you will get the happiness, but it will not remain happiness, happiness, happiness. It turns to zero if you are very lucky. If you're lucky, it will turn to zero happiness, some kind of boring, gray state of matter. But most of the time, 99%, it turns into suffering. It becomes dark, black. If you take the metaphor of happiness as brightness, white; suffering as darkness. If there is too much happiness, this law ensures that there will be too much suffering. This goes hand-in-hand with the Law of Balance, and also with the Law of Cycles. These two laws will be discussed in detail coming in coming parts of this series. So, same about love and hate, and prosperity and poverty, civilization and barbaric cultures. Everything has a rhythm. The polarity is exactly balanced. This is very precise. The universe or the existence is perfect. The Law of Perfection says that you won't get even 0.1% of difference between the poles. And that is why you get as much as of one thing as you get the other. So, somebody gave you a lot of love, probably that same fellow will hate you exactly that much, not more, not less. It can trip any day. It can flip any day. So, there is only one good thing here that the duration is not fixed. If you are happy for one year, it is not that you will be unhappy for one year, you will suffer for one year. It is not like that. If you suffer for one day, it will be enough. It will the polarity is manifested. Similarly, if you are happy for one day, it is possible that you will suffer for one year. Secondly, if you are looking for love, let us say, beauty, it is possible that for 50 years of your life you will spend in love and beauty. It's possible. There is no limit of time there. The polarity can last for long time in one at one pole. It is possible. But then it is necessary that it will shift. Does not matter whether it shifts quickly or slowly. The law says it will shift. So, you can enjoy the sunshine because clouds are coming. Don't worry, it will shift. So, that is also a consequence of impermanence, but impermanence seems to be very innocent law in front of this law, which seems to be really cruel. The good part is, if there is darkness, brightness will happen ultimately. If there is suffering, yes, we don't know when, but there will be happiness. The Law of Balance says that they will be balanced. The polarity says that their degree will match. There is only tiny difference. So, all these laws are very much related. Even the karmic law comes into picture here. So, in short, nothing remains the same; moreover, it changes the polarity. This is due to the nature of vibration. So, no matter how complicated the vibrational structure is, the inherent polar nature of vibration is manifested in the higher aspects of the vibrational pattern. Sometimes the polarity is so large scale that it is impossible to see it. So, we see the existence, the manifestation, the universe, but the Law of Polarity says that it will all go away. We see creation, construction; Law of Polarity says it will be all destroyed. So, it is a major law. It is not something small. But as a human being, we don't worry about the large scale phenomena. We logically we know that that will happen, but it will take so much time that we don't need to worry about it. So, from the spiritual angle, we have a very big polarity. It is called life and death. If something is born, it is guaranteed that it will die. If there is death, it is guaranteed that something new will be born. Probably this thing is important for a few people, seekers, spiritual seekers. And immediately, we don't like this. Immediately, a question comes in the mind of interested seeker: how to rise above this death and birth, beauty-ugliness, love-hate, happiness-suffering, and the useless pursuit of all these things? How to get rid of this? ### Rising Above Polarity So, we can rise above polarity, limited way. Although we cannot break the law, it will always be there, but we can diminish its effect. That is possible. I don't guarantee about life and death and so on. It is beyond my knowledge currently, but you can avoid some extreme manifestations of polarity by being careful, by living an aware life, by checking how you operate in this illusion, maintaining a control over your actions. That is possible through awareness. Awareness is only possible through self-realization; there is no other way. So, if you're not aware, the polarity will make you dance. Highs and lows will be encountered. If you are very aware, you will still encounter it, but you won't need to dance. You can stay peaceful. So, the key is balance, avoiding the extreme. Don't do a lot of something. That is what is called extreme. It's going to happen, polarity. So, we do shift from pole to pole, but we keep it small, within control. Instead of everything going out of control, you set up a limit that, "I won't go beyond this limit, because I know that when the poles shift, they will be unbearable. Right now, I'm enjoying this thing which is positive, but if I do it in an unlimited way, yes, probably it I'll need to experience it in a negative form, and that will be also unlimited." Because, you see, the law says that the degrees will be equal and opposite. It does not say anything about time, or probably I don't know about it so much. There has to be some aspect of time somewhere, so that is that is covered in the Law of Balance, so nothing to worry. It is not wrong to say that. If you want to enjoy something, do it in limited way and do it for a long time. It's not a big problem. Yes, it will flip; then you suffer the consequences for a short time. That can sound really funny. "How can I do that? How can I be sure that this will happen? How can I calculate so precisely something which is so unpredictable?" And you're right. You cannot. You can only throw the dice and and expect that nothing goes wrong totally, completely. You can expect that it won't be a total destruction. So, avoiding extreme is anyway a good strategy everywhere. It is extreme of eating, let us say. Everybody knows that. Extreme sleeping, extreme amount of poverty and extreme amount of wealth. Everything is somewhat poisonous. You see, a little bit of milk or cold drink is okay, but a bucket of milk and a bucket of cold drink can kill you. It is common sense. So, if you avoid extreme polarity, you will get only nominal polarity, just for formality. It will be there. But obviously, you cannot be so precise. You cannot calculate the illusion so precisely. So, you make it your nature, that's all: "I won't do anything extreme, and if something happens in extreme, don't worry. It's all good." That kind of steadiness comes that everything is good, happens for the good, by acceptance. Accept the duality. It is inherent in the illusion; cannot get rid of it. This acceptance is a sign of maturity, mature intellect. That yes, the spring never remains spring, winter comes. The dry season never remains dry, rains come. It is all okay. This is the acceptance. It's a emotion; it is feeling. It may not look logical, but it is logical. It is not a gesture of defeat; it is a gesture of embracing. This is very important to note. Whenever I say accept in this whole series, accept the laws, accept the laws, don't resist, it simply means this. Does not mean defeat. So, a master rises above polarity by accepting the polarity, not by trying to bypass it by hook or crook, and then respecting the limits, not by making his life boring, grayscale, but by choosing the colors carefully. The master will not become a indifferent rock. There will be love. He will knowingly balance it with hate. He knows where to express the hate. There is a good saying that, "If you are angry, express your anger towards injustice, towards evil. If you want to beat somebody up, beat up somebody who is bad, who is worthy of being beaten up. Don't do it for somebody who is innocent. Don't show your anger on somebody who is who loves you, who cares for you." So, it is not wrong to show the anger. It is not wrong to beat somebody up. Where do you direct that energy? That is important. It is necessary to know that. So, the Law of Polarity is not saying that don't suffer, don't be negative, the darkness is a problem. No, it is not saying anything. It is actually a blessing in disguise. Without these polar opposites, you will never know the value of positivity. Without suffering, there is no way to know what is happiness. Without hate, you will never realize the value of love. Ask about the value of love to somebody who got only hate since childhood, who was left alone to suffer. Even a drop of love is like a sea for that person. So, you'll never realize the beauty without the ugliness. You'll never realize the value of good things. It is a blessing. So, the master will never become a neutral rock of some kind, where no up-down happens at all. No, avoiding extreme is one strategy, and limiting it is another. But a skillful master, advanced master knows where to direct the polarity. So, a master loves, obviously. But the master loves knowledge. And a master hates, why not? But a master hates ignorance. A master is happy, yes, when their students are successful. A master suffers very badly when his student fails. So, the master will never avoid polarity, but will simply direct the energy in a proper direction. Probably you got the idea. It is an advanced practice, so everybody fails when they are new. So, we start by simple balance, we start by avoiding extremes, and so on. But then we rise above the polarity even more by learning to direct the polarity in a proper direction. Mother Nature or this existence is already doing it. You can see it around you. There is a lot of ugliness, but Mother Nature covers it up with beauty. A very striking example is a human body. What if you remove the skin from somebody? It is disgusting, ugly, scary, nightmarish, like they show it in horror movies. Even a small cut and wound is very ugly for human beings, but that is by design, you can say. It is really necessary to have this kind of polarity in the body, and that helps in survival. If you don't find something without a skin ugly, then it is a problem. If you don't find the cuts and wounds and diseases ugly, then it is a big problem; survival will be compromised. Because humans and other creatures, they are attracted towards beauty. So, if you want them to get repelled, you must make it ugly. It is all mind-created. Mind-created. So, it is it has happened due to the need of survival. So, the Mother Nature has covered up all the ugliness, which is not really ugliness, it is perceived ugliness, of internals of human body under a very beautiful skin, beautiful hair, beautiful eyes. So, Mother Nature is a perfect artist. She covers up a very angry and violent volcano under beautiful snow caps, forest, and pretty birds. It looks very pretty; suddenly one day, the volcano erupts. So, you will find you will find all these extremes nicely covered up, nicely balanced. A tiger is a beautiful creature, mesmerizing, only until the tiger opens his mouth, then you run away screaming. Same way, your wife is so beautiful and loving only until she gets angry on you, then your happy marriage is hellish marriage, suddenly. So, everything is nicely covered up. The master also does this. A master knows the art of covering up the negative under the positive. Many masters, they teach, but many don't. Most of them, they don't teach. So, they cover up their strictness under sweet words, compassionate talk. They know how to handle the polarity. If you are strict and you talk in a bitter way, arrogant way, poisonous way, negative, insulting way, no student is going to stay with you. Students, they know it is my mistake, but nobody likes this kind of talk. So, how to handle that situation? By talking very sweetly, but strictly, or by not talking at all. That is probably sometimes more effective than anger, while not crossing the limits of polarity. So, you cannot escape the polarity, but you can rise above polarity by using the polarity in a wise way, in an intelligent way. We'll continue discussions on Laws of Memory in coming parts.
