Definition

• The witness (sakshi) is the experiencer — that which observes all experience without being affected or involved. It is pure consciousness.

• The witness cannot be witnessed because it is the seer itself. It is self-luminous — known by its own light.

• All experience appears in the witness, but the witness is not touched by any experience.

• Cultivating the witness attitude (sakshi bhava) is the practice of awareness — knowing 'I am the witness of all that happens.'
