Science, in its broadest sense, is the systematic study of all that exists — everything that can be
experience. On the
path of knowledge, science is not limited to the physical world; it is the fundamental method of acquiring
knowledge through
experience, experimentation and
logic.
Scientific method
The scientific method involves making observations, forming
hypothesis, conducting
experiment, and arriving at theories. A theory is a set of assumptions that appear valid based on evidence, but it is not knowledge itself — it is a model. For a theory or hypothesis to be useful, it must be
falsifiability; if it cannot be proven or disproven, it is useless.
This method is the same as the means of knowledge on the path of knowledge. Science involves the study of
existence using experimentation and falsifiable theories.
Physical sciences
The science focused only on physical phenomena is a specialised branch called physics. This is mentioned because there is a common misunderstanding that science is only about physical stuff. On the path of knowledge, science is a fundamental method that can be used to explore any kind of phenomena — not only that which is perceivable through gross physical senses.
Technology
When scientific knowledge is applied to survival, well-being or comfort, it is called technology. Technology works even when knowledge is incomplete. A continuous refinement of knowledge goes on in all sciences and technologies. However, just because a device works does not mean we have true knowledge of the phenomena behind it.
Science and the path
The path of knowledge itself is scientific — it relies on direct experience and logic, the two pillars of valid knowledge. A seeker is encouraged to question everything, experiment, and verify teachings through personal experience rather than accepting them on blind faith.
