The
Separate Self (Skt. जीव
Jiva / अहङ्कार
Ahamkara) is the false
identification of the
experiencer with the changing, limited
body-mind complex. It is the root of all
suffering and the essence of
ignorance on the
path of knowledge.
The Creation of the Separate Self
- Egoic Survival Mechanism: The separate self (or "I") is not a real entity. It is a temporary construct of the mind created to coordinate the survival, protection, and replication of the physical body.
- The Illusion of "Me" and "Mine": The mind draws an imaginary boundary around the body and memory, claiming ownership of them. It identifies the pure, universal witness with this limited, separate package.
- Constant Fluctuations: The separate self has no stable reality; its position shifts constantly from the body, to emotions, thoughts, memories, and roles. It is maintained by egoic tendencies of fear, anger, lust, greed, and attachment.
Dissolution of the Illusion
- Seeing Through the Illusion: self-realisation is not the physical destruction of the separate self, but the clear recognition of its illusory nature. The seeker discovers that they are the one, boundless experiencer (Paramatman), and that the separate self was merely a temporary, automated program running within universal memory. When this is seen, the burden of bondage and suffering disappears.
