Terminology

Terminology refers to the specialised vocabulary used on the path of knowledge. Clear definitions of terms are essential because much of the confusion in spiritual matters arises from vague or misunderstood language.

Importance of clear definitions

As stated in Chapter 2 of the POK Book: "As a first step, we define all the terms that we are going to use." Without precise definitions, a seeker cannot reliably distinguish knowledge from ignorance.

Key terms

  • Truth — that which is always the case.
  • Illusion — that which appears but is not what it seems.
  • Ignorance — lack of knowledge; blind beliefs.

Sanskrit terminology

Many Sanskrit terms are used because they carry precise meanings developed over millennia of philosophical inquiry:
  • Atman — the self
  • Brahman — the ultimate reality
  • Maya — illusion
  • Buddhi — intellect
  • Manas — mind
  • Ahamkara — ego
