Desire fulfilment is the process by which
desires (
kama) manifest as actions and experiences, creating cycles of
karma and reinforcing the sense of individual self. On the
path of knowledge, understanding desire fulfilment is essential for breaking free from the cycle of
suffering.
The Mechanism of Desire Fulfilment
- The experience is stored back in memory, reinforcing or modifying the original desire — this is the feedback loop of karma.
- Fulfilling a desire does not end it — it usually strengthens the tendency (vasana), creating a cycle of repeated seeking and temporary satisfaction.
On the Path of Knowledge
- The path does not require suppressing desires — it requires seeing through the mechanism of desire with awareness.
- When the seeker recognizes 'I am not this desire; I am the experiencer of this desire,' the identification with desire is broken.
- True fulfilment is not the satisfaction of any particular desire — it is the recognition that the self is already complete, lacking nothing.
- The desire for liberation (mumukshutva) is the one desire that leads to the end of all desires.
