Death

Death is a transition state of the mind and body characterized by the cessation of activity in the lower layers of memory (the physical body), while the higher layers continue to exist. In the nondual framework of the path of knowledge, death is recognized as an illusion and a shift of state, rather than a final annihilation.

Death as a Projected State

  • Cessation of the Gross Body: At death, the physical body (the lowest, grossest layer of memory) breaks down and is recycled back into the earth. However, because the body is merely a projection of the mind, its destruction does not imply the destruction of the mind itself.
  • Survival of the Causal Body: The subtler layers of memory the causal body containing all our stored tendencies (vasanas) and karmic impressions remain completely intact.
  • No Coming Back: Death is functionally identical to astral projection or deep dreaming states, with one key difference: the physical body is completely destroyed, meaning there is no physical vehicle left to return to in the waking state.

The Illusion of Death

  • Unborn and Deathless: The true experiencer (the self) is unborn, changeless, and eternal. It was never born, and therefore it can never die. Only that which changes can have a beginning and an end.
  • Fear of Death: The dread of death arises entirely from ignorance the false identification with the physical body and the ego's desperate protective mechanisms. When the seeker realizes their true nature as the immortal witness, the fear of death dissolves completely.

Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)

During NDEs, when the physical brain flatlines and stops functioning, seekers frequently experience floating above their bodies with complete awareness. This is direct proof that the body is already dead it is merely our conscious attention and presence that makes it appear alive.
