Dependent Existence is the fundamental nature of all
experiences,
objects, and mental phenomena. On the
path of knowledge, recognizing that the world has only a dependent reality is a crucial step in dispelling
ignorance.
The Nature of the Illusion
- Dependent on the Witness: Nothing in this universe exists independently. Every object, body, and thought exists only because it is perceived. There is no experience without the experiencer.
- Metaphor of Water and Waves: Just as waves have no independent existence apart from the water, and a necklace has no existence apart from the gold, the world of appearances has no existence apart from the one conscious Presence. The waves are merely a temporary form that the water takes.
- Mind-Created Forms: Senses format and organize raw vibrations into stable, recognizable objects. Therefore, the physical world has only a dependent, representational existence. It is an illusion (Skt. Maya) that appears to be real due to our conditioning.
The Only Independent Reality
- The True Nature: The only thing that possesses independent existence is the True Nature (the essence), which is the experiencer itself. It does not depend on experiences to be, whereas experiences depend entirely on the Experiencer to appear.
- Discrimination: Developing the ability to distinguish between the changeless independent reality (the Self) and the changing dependent appearances (the world) is the essence of discrimination (viveka).
