The
Subtractive Path (Skt. नेति नेति
Neti Neti - not this, not this; or
Via Negativa) is the foundational methodology of the
path of knowledge that operates through the continuous
negation and removal of what is false, rather than the accumulation of new practices, attainments, or
beliefs.
The Principle of Subtraction
- We Do Not Add, We Remove: Most worldly and spiritual paths are additive — they encourage you to memorize more, write more, discuss more, and perform complex rituals. The path of knowledge is exactly opposite. It is a negative path where we continuously let go of our accumulations.
- Cleaning the Dirt: The experiencer (the Self) is already perfect, complete, and eternally free. Nothing needs to be added to it. The path is simply a process of cleaning the dirt of ignorance and blind beliefs that are occluding the natural light of the Self.
- Losing Everything: On this path, if you find that you have gained a lot of knowledge, pride, or new attachments, you have clearly failed. Real progress means losing your separate individual identity, old conditioning, and mental afflictions.
- Going Home: Gaining knowledge on this path is actually a process of reduction, purification, subtraction, cleaning, dropping, and removing. In the end, when everything superfluous is systematically negated, nothing remains but the vast, silent, and blissful Self. You return home empty-handed.
