An individual is the concept of a separate self, a person who is distinct from others and from the world.

On the path of knowledge, the sense of being an individual is recognized as an illusion arising from ignorance of one's true nature. The fundamental ignorance is not knowing one's own true nature, and as a result, assuming that "I am this body, I am a separate individual, I am very limited."

Upon self realisation, one understands that:

• There is no separate individual

• What was thought to be "I" is actually the universal experiencer

• The existence itself is experiencing itself through the appearance of a body-mind

• The individual is merely a name and form superimposed on the nondual reality

The sense of individuality is the root cause of suffering, bondage, and all the consequences of ignorance.
