Vedas

Vedas are the ancient sacred texts of India, considered the oldest scriptures of hinduism. They contain hymns, rituals, philosophical teachings, and spiritual knowledge. On the path of knowledge, the Vedas are respected as historical records of spiritual inquiry, but authority is given to direct experience and logic, not to scripture.

The Vedas and the Path

  • The Vedas contain profound non-dual teachings, especially in the upanishads (the end portions of the Vedas), which form the foundation of advaita vedanta.
  • Key Vedic concepts align with the Path of Knowledge: brahman (Existence), atman (the self), maya (the illusory nature of the world), moksha (liberation).
  • However, the Path of Knowledge does not accept the Vedas as an authority — all claims are tested against direct personal experience and logical reasoning.

The Four Vedas

  • Rigveda — hymns to deities, the oldest Veda.
  • Yajurveda — ritual formulas and prose.
  • Samaveda — melodies and chants.
  • Atharvaveda — practical knowledge, spells, and philosophical hymns.
