Identification (Skt. आत्माध्यास, Atmadyasa) is the process of mistaking something for oneself.

On the path of knowledge, identification is:

• The root of ignorance - identifying with the body, mind, thoughts, etc.

• The cause of suffering

• What creates the sense of being a separate individual

• Overcome through self realisation

When identification with the body-mind ceases, one recognizes oneself as the universal experiencer.
