A Path (Skt. मार्ग Marga) is a systematic method or journey aimed at removing ignorance and leading the seeker to self-realisation. On the path of knowledge, the path itself is ultimately recognized as a necessary illusion.

The Subtractive Path of Knowledge

• Starting at the End: The Path of Knowledge (Jnana Marga) is unique because it starts at the end. The experiencer (the Self) is already free and perfect. Therefore, the path does not involve building or gaining anything new; it is a subtractive path aimed solely at removing false beliefs and conditioning.

• No Effort, No Detours: This path is called the direct path. It does not prescribe extreme physical practices, long detours, or complex rituals. It requires only the direct application of sound logic and direct experience to dissolve ignorance.

• The Illusion of the Path: A path is necessary only as long as there is an illusion of bondage and a separate seeker. When the ignorance is destroyed, the seeker discovers that they never left home. The path, the seeker, and the goal are all recognized as one.

Other Spiritual Paths

Depending on the seeker's mental makeup, other paths may be suitable:

• Royal Path: Training and purifying the mind through systematic discipline.

• Path of Energies: Manipulating non-physical energies to achieve liberation.

• Path of Actions: Performing selfless and dedicated actions in the world.

• Path of Devotion: Completely surrendering the ego to a higher presence.

• Path of Occult: Utilizing rituals and deities to fulfill desires and transcend them.
