Guru

The word Guru (Skt. गुरु) literally translates as "remover of darkness" (where Gu means darkness or ignorance, and Ru means that which dispels or removes). A Guru is a master who guides the seeker along the subtle and rigorous path of knowledge.

The Function of a Guru

  • Dispeller of Darkness: The Guru does not construct or give you anything new. They simply show you that you are trapped in a dark pit of false beliefs and suggest a way out. They point to the light that is already there.
  • A Trigger, Not a Doer: A Guru cannot pull an ignorant student out of the pit by force. They act as a catalyst or trigger; the student must do the work of contemplation and abiding to pull themselves out.
  • Destruction of the Ego: A true Guru is a specialized instrument that systematically shatters the student's ego, conditioning, and blind beliefs. Under a genuine master, the student's personal identity is shrunk to nothing, revealing their true nature as the experiencer.

The Inner Guru

On the path of knowledge, the ultimate Guru is recognized as the Self within. The external Guru is a temporary, physical projection of your own true essence, acting as a mirror to show you what you already are. Once self realisation is achieved, the division between the teacher and the student dissolves into non-dual oneness.
