Great Masters (Skt. महात्मा
Mahatma / सिद्ध
Siddha) are those highly evolved individuals who have successfully traversed the
path of knowledge, dissolved their
ignorance, and permanently established themselves in the
self. They serve as living beacons of truth and guides for seekers.
Role on the Path
While the truth of the Self is exceptionally simple and ever-present, the layers of human ignorance are deep and persistent.
- Essential Catalysts: For ordinary seekers, progress is nearly impossible without the guidance of a master. The Great Masters, out of their immense compassion, act as triggers that help to pull seekers out of the dark pit of ignorance.
- Protectors of Knowledge: Across millennia, the Great Masters have protected and transmitted the pure, uncorrupted knowledge of reality, preventing it from being lost in the chaos of dogmatic traditions.
- Respect and Humility: Respect for the Great Masters is a non-negotiable quality for any serious seeker. It arises naturally from a deep love for truth. A student who lacks respect for the masters remains trapped in egoic pride and is guaranteed to fail on this path.
The Ultimate Guru
While the guidance of a living master is indispensable, the seeker must ultimately realize that the greatest master is the
self within. In the end, the external masters, the teachings, and the books are recognized as temporary, illusory appearances of that one, universal conscious Presence.
