Compassion

Compassion (Skt. करुणा Karuna) is the natural, unforced expression of recognizing absolute oneness with all that exists. On the path of knowledge, compassion is not a moral duty, an ethical rule, or a practiced behavior; it is the spontaneous and necessary outcome of self realisation.

Origin in Non-Duality

When a seeker breaks through the illusions of the mind, their relationship with the world changes fundamentally:
  • Loss of Separation: The realization of non-duality reveals that there are no "others." All separate individuals, bodies, and creatures are seen as various forms of one's own Self.
  • Love as Unity: unconditional love is the awareness of the non-dual nature of reality. When all experiences are recognized as the movement of the one Self, the barrier of "me" and "not-me" collapses.
  • Natural Compassion: Once you see every being as yourself, you naturally love and care for everything. Causing harm to another is recognized as causing harm to your own Self. Thus, the seeker spontaneously adopts a path of nonviolence (Ahimsa).

Expression on the Path

  • Selfless Service: Spontaneous acts of service and helpfulness arise without any sense of personal doership or desire for reward.
  • Sharing of Knowledge: In the gurufield, compassion manifests as the effortless sharing of the truth. Knowing that others are bound in the nightmare of suffering due to ignorance, the realized mind drops hints of light to guide them back home.
