Tendencies (Skt. वृत्ति Vrutti) are inclinations or dispositions toward certain behaviors. They are processes or groups of processes in the mind or memory that cause specific kinds of actions.

Tendencies can be of hundreds of kinds, but can be classified broadly as follows :

• Animalistic - survival-oriented

• Hedonistic - pleasure seeking, pain avoiding

• Tribal - social, tribal, national, power seeking

• Emotional - emotional gratification

• Intellectual - persuits like arts, sciences, technology, writing, poetry etc.

• Seeker - knowledge seeking, seeking spiritual progress, path or guru

• Spiritual - being established in truth, seeking spiritual practices

• Parahuman - expanded awareness, superpowers, evolution

• Liberated bodhisattvas - freedom and compassion, tendency to teach and uplift all creatures

Tendencies are patterns in memory that influence behavior. They are not the true self.
