Atmabodha Verse 15 and 16

2023-04-20

Verse 15 Koshas Annamayya kosha: is the outermost, made from food and refers to the gross body. Pranamaya kosha: is made of five pranas, which govern the functioning of the physical body. Prana means energy or vital force. It pervades the whole organism, it's physical manifestation, is breath. It pertains to Sushma Sarira. Manomaya Kosha: the mind along with five sensory organs constitute the manomaya kosha. It belongs to Sukshma Sarira. The organs of knowledge and the mind from this kosha is the cause of the sense of 'I' and mine. It is also the cause of bondage and liberation. It pervades Pranamaya kosha. Vigyanamaya kosha: is composed of buddhi/ intellect, the faculty which discriminates, determines or wills. It is associated with the organs of perception. It belongs to Sukshma Sarira and pervades Manomaya kosha. Anandamaya kosha:The fifth or the inner most Kosha is the sheath of bliss. It is the subtlest of the five koshas . In deep sleep, when the mind and senses cease functioning, it stands between the finite world and the Self. It is the last layer and the closest layer to the Atman.Apart from the joy that is perceived from the material world, there is unadulterated happiness in deep sleep. Similarly, in meditation body is still, eyes are closed, and yet the meditator experiences great joy. This joy comes from Anandamaya kosha. Atman is not the five koshas or sheaths. 'I' the pure Self appears to be the five sheaths due to its proximity to the body. One has to realise the difference between me and my body, between me and my senses, between me and the mind-intellect. The delusion happens to the mind that is linked to the Atman. It is the mind that gets deluded. The drama of good and bad karma happens in the mind. One sees this happening to himself/herself.Identifying with this drama, is the ignorance that has to be eradicated. Atman is pure,Atman was pure and will remain pure. Ignorance is in the mind. Verse 16 Just as a rice grain remains distinct from the husk, despite being inside it; likewise,'I' the Atman is distinct from the five koshas despite being seemingly enveloped by them. The existence of that pure Self should be uncovered by using logical reasoning of Knowledge. Impurities are in the mind. Cultivating the sentiment of charity, kindness, forgiveness, serving others, learning to forgive and forget are some of virtuous deeds, which clenses the impurities in the mind. The Atman is pristinely pure.
