Atmabodha Verse 17 and 18

श्लोक 17: आत्मा सर्वव्यापक है। आत्मा का अस्तित्व सब में है, सबके साथ है और सब के बिना भी है। लेकिन आत्मा की रोशनी सब तरफ प्रकाशित नहीं है। जैसे रेत को दर्पण का रूप देने के लिए उसे परिशोधित करके चमकाया जाता है ताकि उसमें प्रतिबिंब दिख सके। जबकि रेत में कुछ नज़र नहीं आता। ठीक इसी तरह आत्मा की रोशनी सब जगह प्रकाशित नहीं है उसे भी प्रकाशित होने के लिए बुद्धि रूपी दर्पण आवश्यक है। इस तरह आत्मा सर्वव्यापक होते हुए भी स्वयं को बुद्धि द्वारा ही स्थापित कर पाती है। "मैं हूं "कि भावना बुद्धि में प्रकाशित होती है । इसीलिए वनस्पति और निर्जीव वस्तुओं में "मैं हूं" की भावना नहीं होती। बुद्धि जब विवेक की चरम सीमा छू लेती है तो केवल (आत्मा वाला) "मैं" ही रह जाता है ‌। गहरी निंद्रा पर शरीर ,मन, बुद्धि सो जाते हैं परंतु यह "मैं " फिर भी साक्षी है। यही "उ मैं " ध्यान और समाधि में भी साक्षी होता है। " मैं"(आत्मा) ना ही जन्म लेता है ना ही मरता है ।यह केवल प्रकाशित / स्थापित /प्रकट होता है। यह स्वतंत्र है ।परंतु उसे प्रकाशित होने के लिए बुद्धि की आवश्यकता है। एक कमरे में सत्संग हो या पार्टी हो ।इससे कमरे में लगे बल्ब का कोई सरोकार नहीं है ।वह हर हाल में रोशनी ही देगा। ठीक उसी तरह मन -बुद्धि आत्मा के प्रकाश में काम करतें हैं।लेकिन आत्मा(रोशनी )का अस्तित्व इनके बिना भी वही है। सब संसार रूपी नाटक आत्मा के अंदर हो रहा है। और यह नाटक मनोरंजन के लिए ज़रूरी भी है । इस " मैं" का शरीर और अंतःकरण से कोई सरोकार नहीं है। आत्मा के लिए सन्यासी और पापी में कोई अंतर नहीं है। यह संसार रूपी पहेली को दृष्टा भाव में ही जीना ज्ञान है। श्लोक 18: स्थूल और सूक्ष्म शरीर दोनों प्रकृति (matter)से बने हैं। परन्तु आत्मा इनसे अलग है। संसार रूपी नाटक प्रकृति कर रही है। पर इस नाटक को करने की सारी शक्ति प्रकृति को आत्मा से प्राप्त होती है । आत्मा के बिना तो प्रकृति की कल्पना भी नहीं हो सकती।जैसे बल्ब बिजली के बिना जल ही नहीं सकता। प्रकृति रूपी बल्ब बिना आत्मा रूपी बिजली के कार्य नहीं कर सकता । इसलिए "मैं " को इस प्रकृति के नाटक का दृष्टा ‌बनना है। यह समझना है: *कौन मरता है-? =शरीर * कौन खुश नहीं है-? =मन *कौन अज्ञानी है-? =बुद्धि , *पर तुम कौन हो-? =दृष्टा (आत्मा) यही परम ज्ञान है।वरना ज़ख्मी जानवर की तरह कभी इधर से कभी उधर से ठोकरें हीई खाते रहेंगे और फिर उनका निवारण करने के लिए किसी ढोंगी पंडित के द्वारा कहे जाने पर कभी शनि, कभी राहू तो कभी केतु की पूजा करवाते फिरेंगे। यह भूल जाते हैं की सारी समस्याओं की जड़ "मन " है। और अगर इसके दृष्टा बन जाए तो सब समस्याएं नाटक मात्र प्रतीत होंगी। जब यह समझ आ जाएगा कि मैं शरीर नहीं हूं। तब इसके द्वारा बनाए गए रिश्ते कैसे सच हो सकते हैं। अपने प्रिय जनों की मृत्यु के बाद उनका शरीर एकदम जला दिया जाता है। अतः रिश्ते केवल शरीर तक ही सीमित हैं। और जब यह शरीर ही नश्वर है तो रिश्ते कैसे सच्चे हो सकते हैं। हमें केवल साक्षी भाव में रहना होएसा ऐसा दृष्टा बनना है जो भीड़ में सम्राट की तरह अकेला ही दिखता है। ऐसा सम्राट जिसे किसी गहने या किसी मुकुट की जरूरत नहीं है । क्योंकि वह स्वयं के प्रकाश से आलोकित है।ने Verse 17 The Atman is all-pervading, present within and without everyone and everything. But it's light doesn't shine everywhere. IT GLOWS IN THE INTELLECT. It is the intellect that enables the feeling of 'I am,' and in its absence, the sense of ' I am' is not there. The sense of 'I am' is not there in deep sleep because the intellect does not function in the state of deep sleep. But, 'I' continues to exist in deep sleep. What doesn't exist is the sense of 'I am.' The sense of 'I- ness' exists only when the intellect is active. One knows that he or she exists in the waking state, and the dream state (as many of us can recollect our dreams). Whereas the unit of mind-intellect is inactive in the state of deep sleep, and hence one doesn't have the sense of 'I am'- in that state. But irrespective of whether the mind-intellect is active or inactive 'I' continues to exist in all the states. The mind-intellect function in the light of 'I.' And even if they are absent, 'I' continues to exist, it makes no difference to 'I' The all-pervading, omnipresent Atman manifests, only in the intellect. The sense of 'Iam' is not there in plants, trees and inanimate objects. Sentient beings like birds and animals possess the unit of mind-intellect and hence they have the feeling of 'I am.' The unit of mind-intellect is essential for the Atman to manifest. Atman is not born, nor does it die. Its existence is independent of everything, but it needs mind -intellect to manifest. There is no sense of 'I am' in the deep meditative state of Samadhi, but 'I' continues to exist even in that state. The mind-intellect's ability to perceive pain is, because of its close proximity to 'I'. The light of the Atman enables mind-intellect, to perceive the pain. &quot;I&quot; am IN the intellect, but &quot;I&quot; am NOT the intellect. Verse 18 The body, senses and mind-intellect are made from prakriti /matter. Atman is separate from prakriti . With the power endowed by the supreme Self, prakriti creates everything. It cannot function in the absence of supreme Self, which is the substratum of the entire universe. Atman the pure Self is the witness of every thing including body, senses and mind-intellect. Shankaracharya says that one needs to be a witness in the play of body-senses-mind. It is the body that dies, the mind that is unhappy and the intellect that is ignorant. One who remains a witness will not be affected by this play. The pure Self is the King. An emperor does not get entangled with the entities who are merely his associates. Atman is resplendent in its own glory.
