Atmabodha Verse 52

Verse 52 The Self lives with upadhis and each upadhi has its own attributes. Annamaya kosha, pranayama kosha, manomaya kosha, vigyanamaya kosha and anandmaya kosha -all five sheaths have their own qualities. Vata, pitta and kapha are the three doshas affecting the functioning of the gross body; any imbalance in the doshas causes all sorts of diseases. The mind and intellect have their own sets of attributes and afflictions. Just as, despite every thing occurring in space; space itself remains untouched - likewise, ‘I’ the real Self lives with all these upadhis but ‘I’ remains untouched and unattached. Shankaracharya compares the enlightened yogi to a fool, to an idiot. When the whole world is in pursuit of materialism, a yogi is contented and desires - nothing. An enlightened, being abides in the bliss of his own Self; totally detached from everything and every being. He is detached from his own knowledge too. He doesn’t indulge in silly exhibitionism. Wind blows everywhere without restraint, but at the same time remains untouched, unattached. Although, ‘I’ am associated with upadhis of body-mind-intellect, ‘I’ remain detached, 'I' remain untouched, ‘I’ remain unaffected. It is the light of ‘I’ that enables the functioning of mind-intellect; but ‘I’ am neither the mind nor the intellect ‘I’ am as wind is, ‘I’ am as space is . The wise ones are - as free as space, as free as wind; only the ignoramuses get stuck in attachments. शलोक 52: आत्मन उपाधियों को ओढ़े हुए है और हर उपाधि की अपनी कुछ विशेषताएं हैं। *पंचकोश(अन्नमयकोश, प्राणमयकोश, मनोमयकोश विज्ञान मयकोश और आनंदमय कोश) की अपनी विशेषताएं हैं। *इसी तरह तीन दोष (वात,पित्त और कफ ) शरीर की कार्य पद्धति में सहायक है और इनमें असंतुलन रोग उत्पन्न करता है। *इसी तरह मन बुद्धि भी अपनी विशेषताएं लिए हुए हैं। जिस प्रकार अकाश में सब कुछ घटित होते हुए भी अकाश सबसे अछूता है। ठीक इसी तरह आत्मन भी इन सब उपाधियों के साथ होते हुए भी अलग है। शंकराचार्य जी एक सर्वोत्तम योगी की तुलना एक मूर्ख से करते हुए कहते हैं -कि जहां सारा संसार माया में लिप्त है ,वही योगी में कोई भी लालसा नहीं है। वह स्वयं में पूर्णता संतुष्ट है। वह माया से ऊपर उठ चुका है। यहां तक कि उसे अपने ज्ञान पर भी अभिमान नहीं है । जैसे हवा हर दिशा में बिना रुकावट से लहराती है और फिर भी कहीं नहीं ठहरती। उसी तरह आत्मन सब उपाधियों के साथ रहते हुए भी उनसे अलग है । उपाधियों के होने या ना होने से आत्मन पर कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता । आत्मन के प्रकाश में मन बुद्धि कार्यरत है पर "मैं" ना ही मन हूं ना ही बुद्धि। "मैं" हवा की तरह आजाद हूं और आकाश की तरह असीम। यही वजह है कि ज्ञानी लोग भी आकाश की तरह अपार और हवा की तरह स्वतंत्र हैं । केवल मूर्ख ही बंधन ग्रस्त है।
